This popular excursion introduces you to some of the best known historical sites and natural phenomena in Iceland. We start by visiting Nesjavellir, a high temperature geothermal area in the scenic landscape of Lake Thingvallavatn, and Nesjavallavirkjun, a geothermal power plant which began its operation in 1990. From there, we go to Thingvellir National Park, where the Icelandic parliament Althingi was founded in the year 930 AD. Here we walk for a little while. Thingvellir is geologically remarkable and the tectonic plate boundaries form a breath taking scenery. Thingvellir is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. We continue to the beautiful waterfall Gullfoss which is in the river Hvita, where we can walk so close to the edge that we might feel the mist of the glacial water on our faces. From Gullfoss we journey to the geothermal active Haukadalur and walk around the incredible spouting hot springs, like Strokkur which can spout water upwards to about 60-100 feet. We proceed to Skalholt church, the ancient seat of the Icelandic bishops. In Skalholt there once was the biggest church that has been built in Iceland, and it was a lot larger than the current Skalholt church. From there we travel towards Hveragerdi, a small and charming horticultural village. Due to weather and road conditions we cannot guarantee visits to Nesjavellir in the winter season, instead we visit Hellisheidi power plant.
