Many birds in Snaefellsnes

Snaefellsnes peninsula is a beautiful area located on the west side of Iceland and offers many recreational activities. The peninsula is a magnificent place to visit and has been named "Iceland in miniature" due to the many national sights that can be found in the area. The majestic Snaefellsjokull glacier is there and people who believe in esoteric think the glacier is the center of a special field of powers.

Our first stops at the peninsula are at Gerduberg, a columnar basalt cliff in Hnappadalur valley, and Olkelda, a natural spring of clean drinking water. We then continue our tour around the peninsula and through the national park. On our way we will stop at Arnarstapi and enjoy its extraordinary shores and scenery. Nature lovers enjoy the spectacular landscapes and peculiarities of the surroundings and spend time hiking and bird watching along the precipitous shoreline where it is quite common to see seals.

We continue our journey to the National Park where you will see rocky and sandy coast, amazing bird life and old ruins of fishermen's huts. In this area there are many signs of ancient eruptions from the volcano with various lava formations and craters, sometimes where lava flow went into the see as in Budahraun. Place-names near Arnarstapi and Hellnar bear on one of the Icelandic sagas', Bardar saga Snaefellsass, relating the story of Bardur, a half human and half giant who after quite dramatic happenings in his life vanished into the Snaefellsjokull ice cap. His treasure is said to be hidden in Bardarkista, a chest-shaped mountain bordering the Saxholsdalur valley. A sculpture of Bardur Snaefellsass stands at the beach at Arnarstapi, made by Ragnar Kjartansson.

Snaefellsjokull glacier is an old stratovolcano which has been the source of both explosive and lava eruptions but nowadays a dormant volcano which attracts thousands of people each year. The latest eruption originated from the summit of the glacier and took place about 1750 years ago. Some visitors assemble here regularly each summer to enjoy the energy radiation, as they believe it to be one of earth's seven energy spots.

Snaefellsjokull glacier is among the most famous sites of Iceland, primarily due to the novel A Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne, in which the protagonists find the entrance to a passage leading to the center of the earth on Snaefellsjokull.

Before we return to Reykjavik we visit Stykkisholmur village by Breidafjordur bay.
