AH63 The Silver Circle

Take this combination tour of Highland tour and Saga trail to make the most of your day

Beautiful Iceland
Iceland
Deildartunguhver
Saga Trail

This combination of Tours AH61 The Saga Trail and AH62 The Highland Road will get you in close contact with Langjokull, one of Iceland’s glaciers and also give you first hand information on the settlement history of the island.

We start our tour by driving along the shores of Hvalfjordur, which was the only way to reach the village Borgarnes before the tunnel was built in 1998. In nice weather this way can open up nice scenery with sea mirroring the mountains at both sides of the fjord. On the northern shore of Hvalfjordur, we visit the Whaling Station, which is still in operation.

Our next stop is the Settlement Center in Borgarnes, where we visit one of the ongoing exhibitions. Our lunch break will be in restaurant Fossatun, from where we drive to Reykholt. Reykholt is renowned for the sagas’ author Snorri Sturluson and his small outside pool, Snorralaug that still can be seen. Snorri was born in 1179, a poet, and politician and his most renowned work is Snorra Edda, a narrative of Norse mythology. From there we continue on to the geothermal area of Deildartunguhver, Iceland’s largest thermal spring, providing 180 l/sec of 100°C hot water. After a short break there we drive to the beautiful glacial waterfalls of Barnafoss and Hraunfossar, viewing the fresh blue color of the river Hvita.

After a short break there we head for the pass of Kaldidalur which gets its name from the valley it crosses, meaning Cold valley. The road takes us between the small glaciers Thorisjokull and Ok and the Langjokull glacier, the second largest glacier in Iceland.

We will stop at the mountain cabin Jaki for a refreshing walk towards the glacier. From there we drive south to Thingvellir national park, where you can get in touch with history and even heart of the nation. After a break there we head over Mosfellsheidi heath back to Reykjavik.
