This tour will take you over the beautiful area of Lakagigar, a crater chain that erupted in 1783, being the largest discharge caused by volcanic activity ever to have been witnessed. For several months Iceland was enveloped in clouds of poisonous gases, killing about three quarters of Iceland's livestock. The population also suffered severe famine.
From Lakagigar we fly over Landmannalaugar, the beautiful valley between the mountains, before returning back to Skaftafell.
The Landmannalaugar environment is literally a wonderland. The rich colors of the mountains surrounding the area and its outstanding contrasts appearing in the raven-black and glittering rhyolite lava fields are truly amazing. The neighboring Hrafntinnuhraun lava-field, which is pitch-black, was created in a volcanic eruption in year 872 but the sour lava-fields closer by Landmannalaugar, the Namshraun and Laugahraun lava-fields, were created in an eruption in 1480, or just over 500 years ago.
On this tour passengers see glaciers, volcanoes and the beautiful landscape north of Myrdalsjokull Glacier, as well as Langisjor Lake. The size of the lake is around 26 km² and 75 m deep.
