America vs. Europe - Helicopter Tour
Fly along the American and European tectonic plates
We will start by taking a look over the Glymur waterful and its colorful nature. Glymur is located in the West of Iceland, in Hvalfjordur fjord and it is the highest waterfall in Iceland with 198 meters high.
Then we will fly over the area of Thingvellir National Park, where the meeting of the North American and Eurasian plate boundaries is visible. About 3000 years ago an 8 kilometer long eruptive fissure opened north-east of Hrafnabjorg and formed the lava field of Thjofahraun.
Thingvellir has a cultural and a historical meaning, since it is the place where the Icelandic Parliament, Althingi, the oldest in the world, has been established in 930 AD. It is also the place where Icelanders declared their independence on June 17, 1944. From the sky, you will be able to witness the power of the Earth and the beauty of the Icelandic nature. We will then head back to Reykjavik.
At Thingvellir there is the Almannagja's fault, a split in Earth’s crust between America and Eurasia tectonic plates, which is clearly visible from the air, as you pass between Europe and America in a blink of an eye. You will also see the beautiful Thingvellir Lake, the biggest natural lake in Iceland.
