Description

We will start by flying over magnificent Thingvellir National Park where the Icelandic Parliament, Althingi, was established in 930 AD and where Icelanders declared their independence on June 17, 1944. The site has been added to the UNESCO's World Heritage List in August 2004.

At Thingvellir there is the Almannagja's fault, a split in Earth’s crust between America and Eurasia tectonic plates, which is clearly visible from the air, as you pass between Europe and America in a blink of an eye. You will also see the beautiful Thingvellir Lake, the biggest natural lake in Iceland.

You will then discover the amazing scenery offered by the Langjokull glacier where we will land if weather conditions permit it. Langjokull is the second largest glacier of Iceland, with 953 km².

Afterwards, we will stop at Geysir geothermal field for 30 minutes to see the wonderful hot springs and geysers, such as Strokkur which spouts every few minutes to a height of 20 m.

After having enjoyed that wonderful scenery, we will head to the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall ("Golden Falls"), which is Europe's largest waterfall. Gullfoss is in the river Hvita which originates from Hvitarvatn on the South-East side of Langjokull.

Finally, we will enjoy the wonderful landscape around the geothermal power plants of Nesjavellir and Hellisheidi. Both are located close to the still active volcano Hengill in the Southwest, from which they take their geothermal energy. Nesjavellir supplies about 25% of the hot water needed for the central heating of Reykjavik.
