The Far End of the World
Hike Among Elves and Trolls in Iceland
In the north east of Iceland lies hidden an area that has recently been discovered as a true gem for hikers. This part of the country has been quite isolated through the centuries giving life to strange stories of elves that are supposed to live among the people there. The landscape comes in all shapes and sizes and the variety of colors is stunning; everything from the black sands of the beaches to the red and white colors of the mountains.

This is a trekking tour
Our trekking trips are a comfortable way to enjoy the great outdoors. These are assisted treks, which means your luggage and food will be transported from hut to hut in a 4x4 jeep. That means you only have to carry a small day pack but still have the luxury of a proper meal and a change of clothes each night. At the end of the day you can relax while your guide prepares dinner and desert!
Complete holiday package: This program can be booked with accommodation in Reykjavik before and after the trek. Activities before and after the trek can also be arranged, such as sightseeing, whale watching or a visit to the blue lagoon.
Itinerary
Day 1: We pick you up at your accommodation or meet at Reykjavik airport for a 45 min flight to Egilsstaðir. When we arrive there we take a short bus ride to Stórurð and start the trek. We walk between the boulders and blue pools as we find our way to the Dyrfjöll mountain range. We continue and traverse through the mountains and descend down towards the little fishing village of Borgarfjörður. We spend the first night in the village which is known for the elves that live there.
Distance: 19km
Walking time: 7-8 hrs
Ascent: 600m/Descent: 800m
Day 2: We start the day by visiting a bird colony and maybe see some puffins. Then the trail leads us over a pass to Brúnavík, a deep deserted inlet. We have a relaxed lunch by the shore and listen to the waves of the north Atlantic. From there we continue up to the pass Súluskarð and enjoy the scenic view from the peaks down to the sea. From Súluskarð we head down to Breiðavík inlet, the biggest on our trek. We spend the night in the comfortable hut in Breiðavík.
Distance: 14km (9mi)
Walking time: 7-9 hrs
Ascent: 400m/Descent: 400m
Day 3: From Breiðavík we take the trail over the mountains above the inlet of Húsavík. On our way we can climb the mountain Hvítserkur, one of the most colorful mountains in Iceland. We will be in the hut in Húsavík in the afternoon. After dinner there is a chance to have a pleasant walk down to the sea and to the little old church that used serve the farms which now have been deserted.
Distance: 13km (8mi)
Walking time: 5-7 hrs
Ascent: 500m/Descent: 550m
Day 4: Today we continue from Húsavík to Loðmundarfjördur, a long valley which was home to about one hundred people early in the 20th century. Before passing a few deserted farms we walk through Loðmundaskriður where the mountains literally fell forward. During the summer there is a lot of birdlife here and eider can be seen. The hut where we spend the night is at the bottom of the fjord close to another charming old church.
Distance: 15km (9 mi)
Walking time: 5-7 hrs
Ascent: 600m/Descent: 600m
Day 5: From Loðmundarfjördur we hike for our last day on an old horse trail over Hjálmárdalsheiði, which over the centuries used to be the main thoroughfare between the Loðmundarfjörður and the Seyðisfjörður. When we reach the top the view is amazing over and into Seyðisfjörður, a long deep fjord with a little village by the bottom. When we descend down, we are on the ring road where we are picked by the bus that takes us back to Egilsstaðir. We arrive in time for the late afternoon flight to Reykjavík. The tour ends at the domestic airport in Reykjavík.
