Description

Experience this unique terrain that bears sign of the forces possessed within Mother Nature.
The still active volcanic area Gjástykki, 5 km north of Mt. Krafla, is one of Iceland's best spot to explore how the tectonic movement of the North American and Eurasian systems takes place.

Several hours are spent exploring still-steaming area of incredible multi-coloured slag spewed up in the 1984 Krafla eruptions.

The Lonely Planet author, Deanna Swaney, wrote after going on a Gjástykki tour. “The wild and little visited landscapes at the northern end of the Krafla fissures may be fresh from the center of the earth, but at times, they don’t seem very terrestrial. On (the) Gjástykki tour we get a unique close up perspective on this otherworldly scene. ”

Optional stop at the Mývatn Nature Baths can be arranged.
