We head to Mount Hekla not far from the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, this rather a traditional cone shape volcano is made up of a series of ridges - it is considered Iceland's most famous and active volcano. We drive to the magnificent Thjorsardalur, the valley through which Iceland's longest river Thjorsa, flows. We take a look at Hjalparfoss, meaning the Helping Falls, getting the name from old history when people were traveling south over the desolate Sprengisandur in the highland and got to this lush area that was a help for their horses to graze and recover. From Thjorsardalur we drive to Ljotipollur, a volcanic crater, now filled with a cobalt blue lake, with the name meaning Ugly Pool. It is an inactive explosion crater close to Landmannalaugar where the rust-red crater walls glisten and sparkle.

At Landmannalaugar, colourful rhyolite mountains fill the views and show sure evidence that geothermal activity is everywhere with lava flows, hot springs and naturally heated rivers crisscrossing the land at every turn. Bring a swimsuit and take the opportunity to bathe in this naturally heated water and even take a walk on ash through the extensive lava fields that lead to the mountainous slopes. We visit Frostastadavatn, a beautiful blue lake flanked by moss-covered lava flows and strange rock formations.
