Nesjavellir and Hellisheidi Super Jeep Tour
Geothermal and Hydro power plants
 |
 |
From the city centre of Reykjavik you drive within its suburbs to Mount Ulfarsfell, which offers spectacular views over Reykjavik and the surrounding area. From the top of this 395 meters high mountain, weather permitting you will have a great view over the Faxafloi bay and the small islands Engey and Videy, Snaefellsnes peninsula and Akrafjall mountain.
You continue via the Hengill, a still active volcano just south of Thingvellir, which power is the source of energy for the Nesjavellir power station. We drive to Nesjavellir, a high-temperature geothermal area which supplies about 25% of the hot water needed for the central heating of Reykjavik. We travel through Grafningur, passing the hydro electric power station at Ljosafoss,
the first power station on the river Sog, east of the mountains separating Reykjavik from the southern lowlands of Iceland.
We visit the greenhouse village of Hveragerdi, where the abundant geothermal activity in the area gives the locals the opportunity to grow all kinds of plants and produce in row upon row of greenhouses. We drive back to Reykjavik via Hellisheidi heath.
