DescriptionFrom Reykjavik we drive to Thingvellir National Park, where the Great Atlantic rift is clearly visible, a rift that is slowly pulling Iceland apart. The Icelandic parliament Alþingi was established in the year 930 AD at Thingvellir. And in 2004 Thingvellir National Park was added to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List and is now one of eight hundred places in the world that have been honored by UNESCO. From there we continue to Gullfoss waterfall meaning “Golden Falls”. Gullfoss is in the river Hvita which originates from Hvitarvatn on the south east side of Langjokull. Gullfoss is Europe’s largest waterfall and it is always spectacular. We visit the hot spring geothermal active valley of Haukadalur which contains the super Geysir which very rarely spouts, but when it does it can spew steaming water 200 feet upwards. But the more active one, the hot spring Strokkur, spouts hot water about 60-100 feet upwards every 5 minutes. In this area there are many wonderful walking paths where you can see steaming vents and colorful, mineral-rich mud formations. We also stop at the green house village Hveragerdi, a small and beautiful horticultural town. Although this trip is an express tour, you will be visiting some of the very best known historical sites and natural phenomena in the country.
