Lava tube in the vicinity of the oldest parliament in the world
Thingvellir is a rift valley due to the continental drift between the North American and Eurasian Plates. Thingvellir area has a high concentration of volcanic activity and newly formed lava fields are seen all over. There’s a number of lava tube caves in those recently formed lava fields.
Gjabakkahellir is one of those lava tubes and it was formed during an eruption about 9000 years ago. The tube is open in both directions, so it’s easy to walk through it. Gjabakkahellir is 364 meters long. Gjabakkahellir has lot to offer in the terms of exploration. The entrances are a stone throw from the main road, during the winter time it offers magnificent ice sculptures, and for those who are looking for beautiful lava formations, you can find Teat Stalactites, shelves and many other amazing formations in there.
