In the lava field Tvibollahraun, only 30 minutes drive from Reykjavik, you can discover a large number of beautiful and exciting lava caves. You’re able to take a stroll through the lava field’s passage, enjoying both the scenery of the capitol and also the lichen entombed lava formations of the ancient lava field. In this tour 4 different caves will be reviewed.

Spenastofuhellir lava tube is around 200 meters long and it has some fantastic lava flow formations such as stalactites. Volundarhusid or “the Labyrinth” is only 100 meters south of Spenastofuhellir lava tube. Volundarhusid lava tube is also 200 meters long and has 6 entrances and it forks in every imaginable way just like labyrinths do. It’s a colorful lava tube with great lava formations that meets the eye.

Nyrdri-Lautarhellir lava tube is nearly 200 meters away from Volundarhúsid. It has 4 entrances and it’s partially collapsed and in parts of it you can stand up without having to duck your head. There’s a narrow tunnel in the southern part of the tube that leads to a chimney, whereas you can climb up. The lava tube is all in all around 150 meters long. Sydri-Lautarhellir lava tube is around 170 meters long, in most places it’s the man’s height but if you want to see it all, you likely will have to crawl around. The lava tube offers some interesting lava formations.

The tour through the 4 caves and the lava passage takes around 4 hours, add to that 1 hour drive to and from Reykjavik and you’ll have a 5 hour trip to a hidden Icelandic volcanic wonderland laden with colorful lichen.

Extreme Iceland offers this 4 cave tour every season of the year.
