Geysir | Gullfoss | Thingvellir

The Golden Circle is a popular tourist route in South Iceland, covering about 300 km looping from Reykjavik into central Iceland and back.

The three primary stops on the route are the national park Thingvellir, the waterfall Gullfoss and the geothermally active valley of Haukadalur, which contains the geysers Geysir and Strokkur.

Other stops include Kerid volcano crater, Hveragerdi greenhouse village, Skalholt church, and the Nesjavellir geothermal power plant.
 

Thingvellir National Park

Thingvellir is a place in Blaskogabyggd in southwestern Iceland, near the peninsula of Reykjanes and the Hengill volcanic  area. Thingvellir is a site of historical, cultural, and geological importance and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland. It is the site of a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It is also home to Thingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland.

Gullfoss (Golden Falls)

Gullfoss is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. The wide Hvita river rushes southward. The average amount of water running over this waterfall is 140 m³/s in the summertime and 80 m³/s in the wintertime. On a sunny day rainbows get form in the mist clouds from the hammering falls which makes Gullfoss a very special sight to see.

Geysir Geothermal Field
There are to be seen some of the most famous sights of the island, the geysers. The biggest geysers of Haukadalur are Strokkur and Geysir itself, which gave others their name. Strokkur is very dependable and erupts every 5 to 10 minutes, whereas the bigger Geysir has been quiet for some time. There are also a lot of other little hot springs nearby.
