The story begins in 2010 when a young lad from Húsavík, a little fishing town up north, was awarded the title "Chef of the year".

The young master chef Gústav Axel Gunnlaugsson has had a passion for food since early childhood but the biggest dream was always of a restaurant of his own. As soon as you find your seat at Sjávargrillið, you realise that the restaurant is a dream that has come true. Gústav spent months traveling around the country, soaking up knowledge, picking up nicknacks along the way, nicknacks that become treasures when put in the right place. Sidings from an old freezing plant from Flatey now serves as a backdrop for the bar, driftwood from Héðinsfjörður is to be found here and there around the restaurant and various object from days gone have found their way to the right place, Sjávargrillið at Skólavörðustígur.

It is this genuine interest in the minor details and the spirit to try new things and experience that make Gústav an award winning chef. The respect for the ingredients and the sheer passion for both picking up the old way of doing things along with finding new ways that make everything from the grill in a class of its own.

Skólavörðustígur, a street in the heart of Reykjavík that is full of art galleries is the perfect location for a seafood grill where culinary art is not just fancy words but a fact. A feast for the eyes as well as the other senses.
