Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival and overnight in Reykjavik. Depending on your arrival time, you may have time to explore the city. Don't miss out on a visit to the Pearl, a landmark offering spectacular view across the city, the interesting Saga Museum and a yummy ice-cream shop. Swimming in an out-door swimming-pool with hot tubs and slides is an amazing way to spend a quality evening with the family.
Day 2
Discover the magnificent golden sites of the south, the Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir hot springs. Feeling the power of the queen of Icelandic waterfalls and viewing the geysers spout up hot water every few minutes is a fascinating adventure. With small children it is ideal to stop by the Family Park and Zoo at Slakki, to see domestic animals up-close in a protected environment and to enjoy the playground area. Stay for 3 nights in a cottage in the south area.
Optional: kayak tour from Stokkseyri, river rafting in Hvítá river, ATV-quad biking.
Day 3 and 4
Explore the nature wonders of the south coast. The black sandy beaches are perfect for families to play soccer or collect shells and beautiful stones. Kids will love the fact that you can actually walk behind one of the waterfalls, namely Seljalandsfoss. The folk museum at Skógar and the nearby waterfall Skógafoss make a fascinating stop. Enjoy a visit to Þjóðveldisbærinn, a replica of an old Viking farm while touring Þjórsárdalur valley, huddling below the impressive volcano Hekla. Last but not least visit the rocky headland of Dyrhólaey where thousands of puffins nest in the summer. A great photo opportunity!
Optional: ice hiking on Sólheimajökull, boat tour from Vík, snow-scooter tour on Mýrdalsjökull glacier, Skógar folk museum.
* Dyrhólaey is closed during nesting season in the spring from the middle of May until the end of June.
Day 5
Drive to Þingvellir National Park, the site of the ancient Icelandic parliament and of great geological and historical interest. Close by is Úlfljótsvatn lake, home of the Icelandic scout movement and a haven for energetic kids with fun playground equipment, a climbing wall, mini-golf, an obstacle course, boats, canoes, kayaks and bicycles for rent. Continue to the beautiful Borgarfjörður region, where it is ideal to stop in Hvammsvík to try out your angling talent. Stay for 2 nights in the area.
Optional: entrance to Úlfljótsvatn, fishing in Hvammsvík.
Day 6 and 7
The agricultural area of Borgarfjörður is an ideal location for retracing the Viking footsteps along the ancient Saga trails and to visit nature wonders such as the waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. Close by is the Snæfellsnes National Park with dramatic sea cliffs, abundant bird life, sweeping gold beaches and the glistening icecap of Snæfellsnes Glacier. Play hide-and-seek in the fantastic lava formations or test your strength lifting large stones located at the beach of Djúpalónssandur. A boat tour from Stykkishólmur is highly recommended, where you can taste shellfish fresh from the sea. By the end of Day 7, drive to Reykjavik city for your last overnight stay.
Optional: boat tour from Stykkishólmur.
