Discover your own personal Iceland in our Short Self Drive: Explore Reykjavik and Surroundings where you can choose your own pace and itinerary. We offer program suggestions but the final choice is yours.

The basic package is 3 days and 2 nights. You can add 1-3 days to the package if you wish. The accommodation is the same during the entire tour.

 

Day suggestion 1: THE ENCHANTING REYKJANES PENINSULA

Drive to Reykjanes peninsula and make the Blue Lagoon your first stop. The Blue Lagoon is a unique natural pool of geothermal seawater in the middle of a moss-covered lava field. It is known for its special properties and its beneficial effect on the skin and attracts visitors from all over the world.

Drive on through the small fishing village of Grindavik to Krysuvik geothermal area where you can visit the sulphur springs at Seltun. The nearby Lake Kleifarvatn also offers a unique landscape. From Lake Kleifarvatn you can either head back to Reykjavik or continue along the rugged south coast and visit the popular Strandarkirkja church. Legend has it that seamen in mortal danger vowed to build a church on the coast if they survived. Today, people with various problems still seek help at the church.

Interesting things to do/places to visit in the area:

- Excellent hiking trails in Seltun leading up to the mountain Sveifluhals,
- The Blue Lagoon,
- Saltfisksetur (Salt Cod Museum) in Grindavik,
- Reykjanes Peninsula on an ATV/Quad bike or on a regular bicycle,
- Horse riding tour among lava fields and along the coast line.

 

Day suggestion 2: GOLDEN CIRCLE

Spend the day enjoying scenic and historic highlights of the south coast. Visit Gullfoss waterfall, the famous Geysir geothermal area and the UNESCO site of Thingvellir National Park, which is also the site of the ancient Icelandic parliament. The park itself is situated in a stunning volcanic landscape, on the border of Iceland's largest natural lake.

Interesting things to do/places to visit in the area:

- River rafting in the Geysir area,
- Cave tour close to Thingvellir,
- Geysir Geocentre.

 

Day suggestion 3: CITY DAY

Spend the day visiting highlights of the unique city of Reykjavík. Enjoy your stay to the fullest and travel the city from one end to the other as you please and at your own pace. With your 24-hour Reykjavík Welcome Card (included) you can experience the best of what the city has to offer. The card offers free admission to many great museums and attractions, discounts at shops and restaurants and free internet access.

Example of the free admissions with your card:

- The National History Museum,
- The Culture House,
- Reykjavik 871 +/-2 Settlement Exhibition,
- Árbæjarsafn Outdoor Museum,
- The Reykjavík City Museum,
- The Reykjavík Maritime Museum,
- Ferry to Viðey Island,
- The city thermal pools.

 

Day suggestion 4: BORGARFJORDUR NATURE

Drive north of the city and enjoy the majestic beauty of the two big fjords, Hvalfjörður and Borgarfjörður. Visit the historic site of Reykholt, home to one of Iceland’s most famous son. It was at this location that Snorri Sturluson lived and wrote much of the literature that made him the most significant Nordic poet of the Middle Ages.

Visit Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls and admire the largest hot spring in the Northern Hemisphere, Deildartunguhver. Continue to Reykjavík in the afternoon and return the car.

Interesting things to do/places to visit in the area:

Snorrastofa (culture- and medieval centre built in memory of Snorri) in Reykholt.

 

Day suggestion 5: SCENIC NATURE AND BIRD EXPLORING

Drive along the spectacular south coast with sweeping landscape of sandy deserts, rocky shores and rolling farmland, sandwiched between snow-capped glaciers, mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Visit the beautiful Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls and enjoy exploring the rocky headland of Dyrhólaey*, where thousands of puffins nest during the summer.

*Please note that Dyrhólaey is closed during nesting season in the spring from middle of May until June 23rd.

- Saga Centre in Hvolsvöllur,
- Snow scooter tour on Mýrdalsjökull glacier,
- Glacier hike on Sólheimajökull glacier,
- Skógar folk museum.

 

Day suggestion 6: THE SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA

Lush fjords, volcanic peaks, dramatic sea cliffs and sweeping golden beaches are just a few of the amazing contrasts that characterize the Snæfellsnes National Park. The glistening icecap of Snæfellsjökull glacier, believed by many to be one of the most powerful energy centers of the earth, is the crowning jewel. Explore the countless natural wonders of the peninsula; Arnarstapi sea cliffs with great variety of bird life and the rocky beach of Djúpalónssandur before driving along the north coast through bustling fishing villages.

Interesting things to do/places to visit in the area:

- Snow scooter tour on Snæfellsjökull glacier,
- Taste shark and Brennivín the local schnapps at Bjarnarhöfn.
