This is our most popular tour which highlights the beautiful south coast and gives you the opportunity to re-trace the footsteps of the Viking Sagas and at the same time view the many striking waterfalls and magnificent geysers & glaciers that Iceland offers.

The duration of this tour is 5 days and 4 nights. You will spend 2 nights at two different hotels while in the countryside and 2 nights in Reykjavík.  It is possible to extend your stay in Reykjavík if you wish. The accommodation in this package is available with or without private facilities.

You have the opportunity to combine the stunning natural scenery that Iceland has to offer with the rich history and historical places dating back to the Viking Age.
Even though the tour is relatively short (5 days) you cover all the major attraction in southwest Iceland, including Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot spring, as well as visiting the most historic sites of the country, e.g. Thingvellir National Park.
With an easy upgrade of your car to a 4wd, you can travel through the highland track of Kaldidalur, a mountain pass between two glaciers in the south.

 

As in all of our organized self drive tours, you will receive a detailed itinerary as well as a map upon arrival at your first accommodation. For your safety and in case of emergency or after hours assistance, you will be provided with an emergency phone number. 

 

DAY 1

Arrival and overnight in Reykjavik.

 

DAY 2

Visit south coast highlights such as Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, Mýrdalsjökull glacier and Dyrhólaey*, a rocky headland where thousands of puffins nest during the summer.

Optional: 
• Snow scooter tour on Mýrdalsjökull glacier,
• Kayak tour from Stokkseyri,
• The Saga Centre in Hvolsvöllur.

*Please note that Dyrhólaey is closed during nesting season in the spring, middle May until June 23rd.

 

DAY 3

Explore Þjórsárdalur valley and its landscape of sharply contrasting birch woods, sandy lava fields, rivers and waterfalls, huddling below the impressive volcano Hekla. Continue to Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot spring area.

Optional: 
• Þjóðveldisbærinn - a replica of an old Viking farm,
• River rafting in the Geysir area,
• ATV-quad biking in Haukadalur.

 

DAY 4

Visit Þingvellir National Park, site of the ancient Icelandic parliament. Then via Hvalfjörður fjord or Kaldidalur highland track (4WD needed). Your journey continues to the beautiful Borgarfjörður region and Reykholt, home of the 13th century scholar Snorri Sturluson. Return to Reykjavík in the afternoon.

Departure.
