This tour, offered all year around, is a circle around Myrdalsjokull glacier. This is the fourth biggest glacier in Iceland, covering an area of around 580 square kilometers. Under the thick shell of ice lies the volcano Katla which has erupted at least 23 times in historical times. The last eruption in Katla was 1918.

From Reykjavik we head east to Mount Hekla and from there we drive a highland-road called Fjallabaksleid sydri to a notorious region named Ad Fjallabaki, which literally means behind the mountain. We drive on to Mount Laugafell (Hot-spring-hill), lake Alftavatn (Swan-lake) and a place called Hvannagil (Angelica-ravine). From there we drive through a sandy mini-desert named Maelifellssandur and to Mount Maelifell (Measure-hill) which reaches 800 meters over sea level, then north to the nice little highland lodge Strutsskali where we spend the night. This lodge, which was built in year 2002, is heated up with oil and equipped with good kitchen facilities and WC.

On day two we take a two hour hike from the lodge to the warm natural bathing-pool Strutslaug. In winter-time it is often possible to drive the entire way to this wonderful hot-spring pool, which is a natural bathing-pool of convenient size. It is located by the side of a little cold-water river and is devided in two parts by a piled up wall of natural stones.  Its size is 6 x 6 meters and 8,5 x 5 meters. Its maximum deep is around 50 cm. In the smaller part of the pool the temperature is 43 degrees centigrade and 37 degrees in the bigger part. Around 30 people can bathe in the pool together. After a refreshing bath we return to the lodge and enjoy the rewarding view along the way. Then we spend another night in the friendly lodge.

On day three we drive to the Skaftartungur region east of the glacier and then over another sandy wasteland, Myrdalssandur, to the amiable seaside village Vik on the vast sandy south coast of Iceland. On the way back to Reykjavik we explore – among other things –  two extraordinary waterfalls, Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss with its unique hiking-trail behind the falling water.

Extreme Iceland offers tours of all kinds all year around to the diverse and astonishing region of glacier Myrdalsjokull. The tour described above can easily be prolonged or shortened according to the needs and wishes of each and everyone.
