Northern Lights Tours in IcelandAurora Borealis day tours or longer tours
Extreme Iceland offers specially designed northern lights tours for everyone that wants to witness the magnificent display of colors and lights from the aurora borealis, October through April. We offer both short evening trips to the countryside away from any city light obstruction and also longer trips to central highlands of Iceland and to the northern part of Iceland, closer to the Arctic circle where there is the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Watching the Northern Lights surrounded by the glories of Icelandic nature is like visiting a storybook full of magical beings and charmed places. You'll never find such a place or sight anywhere else. The name Aurora Borealis combines Aurora, the Roman goddess of the dawn, and Boreas, the Greek name for the north wind. The Cree people call this phenomenon the "Dance of the Spirits." Auroras are derived from tiny solar particles that form plasma clouds of electrons and protons, created during magnetic storms on the sun. While these are traveling through space, they become trapped in the Earth's magnetic field and collide with atoms of gases in the upper atmosphere (at an altitude of 100-250 km). These atoms start to glow and then emit bands of light that form the Northern Lights. Iceland is a perfect place to see the Northern Lights due to the location and longer periods of darkness. The Northern Lights can only be seen on a clear night. We offer tours for the Northern Lights as an evening tour out of Reykjavik, to north Iceland and to the central highland of Iceland and we often manage to find a clear sky. Before we start our Northern Lights tour we check the weather forecast, canceling if the evening sky is clouded in all areas and weather conditions are not favourable. We cannot guarantee sightings even if the tour is operated. Contact Extreme Iceland for further information regarding our Northern Lights tours. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
