One kilometer long wonderworld in subterranian Iceland

Leidarendi lava tube is about 900 meters long and is considered to be a subterranean wonder world. The entrance is a small pit that leads down into the cave; the cave itself runs in both directions and connects in two parts so it runs in a circle.

One of earth's most spectacular lava tube caves

Buri is probably the most prized of all the Icelandic lava tube caves. Bjorn Hroarsson vulcanospeleologist discovered Buri the 7th of may 2005 and that find was considered one of the more remarkable discoveries in Speleology in Iceland for the last 1000 years.

Raufarholshellir lava tube cave is in Leitahraun lava field on Reykjanes peninsula. The cave was formed in a lava flow around 5000 years ago. Raufarholshellir lava tube cave is one of the better known lava caves in Iceland and it's easily reachable.

Surtshellir is the largest and best known of all caves in Iceland. Much has been written about Surtshellir and it was told that in earlier centuries a band of outlaws resided in the lava tube, where they raided the countryside and stole livestock from neighboring farms.

Vorduhellir lava tube is around 1100 meters long and is the longest of all known lava tubes in the Thingvellir National Park. Hiking through the lava tube is a fun experience but should not be considered an easy feat. By most parts the lava tube has not been changed for 9000 years .

Easily reachable and fantastic lava tube

It takes about an hour to drive from Reykjavik to the lava tube cave named Arnarker in Leitahraun lava field. From the road there's a short path to the cave's entrance, but the cave is a hollow pit that reaches about 16 meters down vertically.

Floki is 1096 meters long and it forks in several directions and can be difficult to navigate. Preparations should be made before entering the cave and people should be well equipped with flashlights. The length of the cave of 1096 meters makes it the 10th longest lava tube in Iceland.

Hvammahraun is the name of the lava field that originated in the volcanic crater of Eldborg in the Brennisteinsfjoll territory. The lava field covers over 36 sq. kilometers and most of it had passages to the lowlands in the south and in the west of the mountain.

Thingvellir is a rift valley due to the continental drift between the North American and Eurasian Plates. Þingvellir area has a high concentration of volcanic activity and newly formed lava fields are seen all over. There's a number of lava tube caves in those recently formed lava fields.

The Tvibotni lava tube has a great amount of beautiful lava formations. The cave is larger then expected for a lava tube when you enter the second half of the upper floor, for it has 10 meters width and 10 meters height from floor to the ceiling.

In Hnappadalur valley in eastern part of Snæfellsnes peninsula there was an eruption early in historic time which created the crater Gullborg and the lava field Gullborgarhraun which covers around 15 sq. kilometers. The magma flowed in several very large subterranean passages.

Ishellir lava tube is the largest of the 5 lava tubes in Purkholahraun lava field. It's 282 meters long and it's pretty spacious. This lava tube lies deep within the lava field and because of its position there's a lot of ice formations in and around the cave.

One of the most magnificent lava tube systems in Iceland

A little under 200 lava tubes have been found in the Laki lava field. North-east of Laufbalavatn lake resides one of the more magnificent lava tube systems in Iceland. On only 500 sq. meter part of the lava field have over 5 kilometers of lava tubes been discovered and cataloged.
