East of Reykjavik lies a mountain named Hengill. Hengill is made from a Palagomite tuff and its highest point is around 800 meters over sea level. Hengill is a central volcano and under it is a giant magma chamber. The Hengill area is one of the largest and powerful geothermal areas in the world.

Vatnajokull glacial ice cap is Europe's largest glacier and Earth's third largest glacier, about 8300 square kilometers in size. Hidden beneath the icecap are several volcanic systems, such as Bardarbunga, Grimsvotn, Thordarhyrna, Kverkfjoll and Oraefajokull.

Mount Hekla is one of Icelands most famous volcanos. Together with the volcano Katla in Myrdalsjokull glacier and Grimsvotn area in Vatnajokull glacier, it is on of Icelands most active volcano. This linear-shaped volcano has erupted 20 times in historical times - the last one thousand years.

Hvalfjordur is a deep fjord that reaches far inland just north of Reykjavik. Until the late 1990s, those traveling by car had to make a long detour of 62 km around the fjord on the Highway nr. 1, in order to get from the city of Reykjavik to the town of Borgarnes.

The geothermal area around Hengill plateau is the second most powerful on Earth. This is a high heated area due to a volcanic chamber stationed beneath it and thousands of hot springs and steaming vents can be found in the area. In the valleys close to Hveragerdi, hikers can find a number of pathways.

We drive east from Reykjavik and set our course to the highland road Sprengisandur that lies between two of Icelands most magnificent glaciers, Hofsjokull and Vatnajokull, The night we spend in the mountain hut at Nyidalur, which is an oasis by the Sprengisandur highland road.
