Highland circle - longer version
Sprengisandur, Askja, Myvatn, Dettifoss, Asbyrgi
This is a great tour where you can see all the highlights of Icelandic nature and natural wonders. We will explore even more wonders and in more detail than in the short version of this tour.
Extreme Iceland offers this adventurous highland circle all year around. We take pleasure in planing both shorter and longer circles around the highlands of Iceland and its unique wonders.
Day one:
We drive east from Reykjavik to volcanic mountain Hekla. From there we drive to the highland geothermal oasis of Landmannalaugar and spend the first night at the central highland tourist station by Hrauneyjar dam.
Day two:
We set the course north on Sprengisandur highland-road and cross east through the highland lake-district Gaesavatnaleid to Askja caldera/crater lake where we spend the night in the local mountain hut.
Day three:
We explore the Askja caldera/crater lake area with its recent volcanic activity and then drive to the powerful river of Jokulsa a Fjollum and south to Kverkfjoll geothermal area by glacier Vatnajokull where we spend the night in exclusive highland landscape of ice and fire.
Day four:
From the Kverkfjoll area we drive north to lake Myvatn – which is an area of incomparable natural settings – where we spend the night.
Day five:
We drive down north by the magnificent river Jokulsa a Fjollum to Europas largest waterfall Dettifoss in the Canyon national park of Holmatungur and Asbyrgi. From there we drive to the costal town of Husavik – „The whale-watching capital of the world“ – and sleep there.
Day six:
Whale-watching at Husavik by boat, for those who wish to experience that, then west to Godafoss waterfall and the town of Akureyri where we spend the night.
Day seven:
We drive west from Akureyri to the Skagafjordur region and down south the highland-road Kjolur that lies between the galciers Langjokull and Hofsjokull and spend the night at the unique geothermal area Hveravellir at the mids of the highlands. We offer a bath in the natural hot-water-pools there both in the evening and in the morning.
Day eight:
We drive south from Hveravellir down the highland-road Kjolur to lake Hvitarvatn and explore the magnificent waterfall Gullfoss. Then we drive on to the remarkable geothermal area of Geysir with its world famous hot springs and through THingvellir national park on the way back to Reykjavik.
