Langjokull - Second largest glacier in Iceland
An unbeleivable trip on super jeeps to the fourth largest glacier in the world
Langjokull (Long Glacier), covering an area of 950 square kilometers with the summit at 1355 meters above sea level, is the second biggest glacier of Iceland, on average it is about 200 meters wide and teh most width is 700 meters, it is located in the highland to the west of the glacier Hofsjokull. The glacial fed lake Hvitarvatn at the east side of Langjokull, the headwaters of the river Hvita, provides outstanding scenery with glaciers creeping down to the lake. The southwestern part of the glacier, Geitlandsjokull offers an amazing view from the top at a clear sky.
All year round it is possible to cruise across the glacier from the mountain cabin Jaki to Skalpanes. In wintertime it is also possible to drive up from the shield volcano Skjaldbreidur up to Jokulkrokur and even up to the top of the glacier. From there it is almost possible to drive to all directions; take west getting to Husafell, or east descending to Skalpanes and from there following the road down to Geysir. It is even possible to take direction north on the glacier to Hveravellir for a stay there with a dinner and relax in the exotic geothermal hot pool. Another cool choice is a stay and dinner overnight at the glacier cabin Kirkjubol.
Langjokull is a great place to experience a world of snow and ice all year round. But hiking there can be risky by means of cracked areas on the glacier and guided tours are recommended.
Langjokull is also one of the best places in Iceland to see the Northern Lights.
Tours with specially modified vehicles on Langjokull are possible all year round but are weather dependant. Glacier walks and ski walks are getting more popular. We also offer this tour as a day trip, weekend trip or a longer trip, tours with all kinds of different snowmobiles, all terrain vehicles and jeep tours on Langjokull. The plan of the trip can be modified to people’s wishes but depending on snow, weather and all conditions.
