Tour outline:

Day 1: Beauties of Borgarfjörður

We leave the capital to discover the beauties of the Borgarfjörður area. But first we drive up and around the fjord Hvalfjörður. At its end we stop for a hike in the area of waterfall Glymur. From there we drive into the beautiful Borgarfjörður area and break at the village Reykholt where the Viking historian Snorri Sturluson composed some of his famous works. Thereafter we stop at the astonishing waterfall Hraunfossar. Before checking in at our friendly accommodation we head for the biggest geothermal spring in Europe – Deildartunguhver. After BBQ dinner prepared by your guide at Lýsuhóll we have the opportunity of a short evening tour to the sand beach at Langaholt.

 Day 2: Mystic Snæfellsnes

Today we'll give the peninsula Snæfellsnes, sometimes called “Iceland in a Nutshell”, all our attention. This includes a tour to the Snæfellsnes National Park and around the glacier Snaefellsjokull, the mountain/volcano where Jules Verne's novel “Journey to the center of the Earth” started. We also visit and walk along the cliffy coastline by the village Arnarstapi.

We arrive in the afternoon in the beautifully sited fishing village Stykkisholmur where our ferry is awaiting to take us over the Breiðafjörður bay to the remote West Fjords. After a 2,5 hours cruise across the scenic bay we reach the fjord Vatnsfjörður where our cozy accommodation is located.

Day 3: Bird watching at Latrabjarg

We head to the most western point of Europe, the dramatic and rugged coast of Látrabjarg. This place is perfect for getting to know Icelandic birdlife. On our tour we see, depending on season, puffins that are happy to let us approach to within a few feet. Normally we also have a quite good opportunity to get a glimpse of some seals down at the light house. In the evening we'll have the opportunity to take a soothing bath in a natural geothermal spring right at the coastline of the fjord.

 Day 4: The West Fjords

We take a morning hike in the next door Nature Reserve of Vatnsfjordur. This reserve is one of the gems of the West Fjords and here we enjoy the rich bird life and flora. We stop at the impressive waterfall Dynjandi and there we enjoy a picnic lunch before continuing to the capital of the West Fjords. On our way to Isafjörður we pass deep, sheltered fjord landscapes. In the afternoon we explore the town Isafjörður with its lively fishing harbor. We will have dinner at a local restaurant. If weather conditions are well-disposed we will have an evening tour to close by town Bolungarvík and up to the mountain Bolafjall where we enjoy unforgettable sunset view over the fjords.

 Day 5: Heydalur

If the evening tour was not feasible yesterday we will begin the day with experiencing the amazing view from Bolafjall in daylight. Close to Bolungarvik is Ósvör museum, where guests can experience the life of fishermen in the 18th century. We drive the shore line along the Isafjarðardjúp and arrive early afternoon to the valley Heydalur where our inviting accommodation is located. You can spend the afternoon at Heydalur relaxing in the natural pool or with optional activities like hiking, horse riding, kayaking, or even angling in mountain lakes.

 Day 6: Remote Wilderness

In the morning we start for the most northern glacier of Iceland called Drangajökull and the nearby lagoon Kaldalón. In this remote and hidden place we experience a terrific hiking area of Iceland. Back to Heydalur in the afternoon.

 Day 7: Back South

We leave the adventure land of Heydalur and the West Fjords behind to drive back down to our capital. On our way we first stop at Hólmavík village located in Strandir, the eastern coast of the West Fjords. In former days in Iceland the people in Strandir were the most knowledgeable in sorcery and there is the Museum of Sorcery & Witchcraft located. The Museum explains the folklore connected to magic and visitors can among other things learn how to deal with ghosts! We continue to Haukadalur valley in Dalasýsla to visit the old farm house of Eiríkur Thorvaldsson (Eirik the Red) – the first settler in Greenland. We reach Reykjavik around 18:00 hours where the varied cultural life of our capital is waiting.
