Circle around Iceland at a comfortable pace to enjoy the unique and diverse scenery that Iceland has to offer, including the legendary Snaefellsnes peninsula with the legendary Snaefellsnes glacier as the crowning jewel.

The duration of this tour is 11 days and 10 nights.  You will stay 8 nights at different hotels while in the countryside and 2 nights in Reykjavík. It is possible to extend your stay in Reykjavík if you wish.

You get a chance to explore the magical Snæfellsnes Peninsula, including Snæfellsnes glacier where, according to Jules Verne, the entrance to the center of the earth can be found.

The only part of the country which is not included in this tour’s itinerary are the mighty Westfjords. Hopefully, you will come back to Iceland and explore them.
 

As in all of our organized self drive tours, you will receive a detailed itinerary as well as a map upon arrival at your first accommodation. For your safety and in case of emergency or after hours assistance, you will be provided with an emergency phone number. 

 

DAY 1

Arrival and overnight in Reykjavik.

 

DAY 2

Today's highlights include Þingvellir National Park a place of great geological and historical interest, the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot-spring area.  Drive along the mighty Þjórsá River to Þjórsárdalur valley with Mt. Hekla, Iceland's most famous volcano towering above.  Continue to the South Shore area.

Optional: River rafting in the Geysir area, ATV-quad biking in Haukadalur, Stöng - Viking-age farmhouse. 

 

DAY 3

Visit Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls.  Continue to Dyrhólaey* a rocky headland where thousands of puffins nest in the summer.  Across the vast lava field of Eldhraun to the picturesque village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, former site of a 12th-century Catholic convent.

Optional: Skógar folk museum.

*Please note that Dyrhólaey is closed during nesting season in spring, middle May until June 23rd.

 

DAY 4

Visit Skaftafell National Park, a green oasis nestling below the great Vatnajökull glacier offering various hiking possibilities.  Continue to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon where huge icebergs, float and grind together in the still, deep waters of the lagoon.  Drive along the rugged and varied coastline of the magnificent East Fjords to Egilsstaðir the largest town in the east.

Optional: Jeep tour to Vatnajökull glacier, Boat tour on Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon, boat tour to Papey Island, Petra's stone collection.

 

DAY 5

Explore Egilsstaðir and surrounding area.  Visit Hallormsstaður the largest forest plantation in Iceland set along Lake Lagarfljót, which according to legend contains a monster.

Optional: Bout tour on Lake Lagarfljót. 

 

DAY 6

Drive to Vopnafjörður village, with spectacular coast and natural hot springs.  Continue to Þórshöfn village with 500 inhabitants which is situated on Langanes peninsula.  It is also possible to continue to Lake Mývatn area or Húsavík for an overnight.

Optional: Burstafell museum - an old farmstead.

 

DAY 7

Travel across Öxafjarðarheiði plateau.  Visit Ásbyrgi, a magnificent horseshoe-shaped canyon in Jökulsárgljúfur National Park.  Drive along Tjörnes peninsula to the fishing port of Húsavík, before continuing to Akureyri the capital of the north.

Optional: Whale watching from Húsavík.

 

DAY 8

Explore the natural wonders of Lake Mývatn area including the fantastic lava formations of Dimmuborgir, Krafla volcanic area, and the pseudo craters at Skútustaðir.  Visit Goðafoss waterfall on the way to Akureyri. 

 

DAY 9

From Akureyri continue over Öxnadalur pass to the historical region of Skagafjörður renowned for horse breeding.  You have an option of visiting the old farmstead at Glaumbær a great example of old Icelandic architecture.  Continue the drive to Snæfellsnes peninsula.

Optional: River rafting in Skagafjörður, horse riding in Skagafjörður. 

 

DAY 10

Circle around the legendary Snæfellsjökull peninsula passing the small fishing villages of Hellissandur and Grundarfjörður.  Don´t miss the striking columnar basalt rock formations at Arnarstapi.  Make a stop at the rocky beach of Djúpalónssandur.  Pass Eldborg crater on route to the agricultural region of Borgarfjörður before returning to Reykjavík.
