This spectacular tour will take us to the famous Grímsvötn eruption site – an otherworldly landscape that is hauntingly beautiful. It is located on the southwestern side of the Vatnajökull Glacier, Europe’s largest and has the highest eruption rate of any of the volcanos in the land of fire and ice. Most of Grímsvötn is hidden underneath the ice cap, meaning that the volcano’s sub-glacial eruptions involve phreatomagmatic explosive activity, thanks to the interaction of molten magma and glacial meltwater. Grímsvötn remains very much active and erupted in 2011, 2004, 1998 and 1996 – ensuring that it provides a profound insight into the powerful volcanic forces that helped craft Iceland and our world. If you want to see a place that marries volcanos and glaciers – truly encapsulating the land of fire and ice, then this spectacular tour is an absolute must.
