Join us on a glacier hike and ice caving expedition

Our friendly staff will provide all the gear you need for this glacier hiking and ice caving tour on Falljökull Glacier, the name means ‘Falling Glacier’ and it does, indeed, drop spectacularly, it is, effectively, a giant frozen waterfall dropping from the mountain. The drive to Falljökull does not take many minutes. With stunning glacial scenes opening out before you your qualified glacier guide will show you how to strap on your crampons and use the other glacier gear before giving you a safety briefing. The moment when you set foot on the glacier for the first time is always incredibly exciting and amazing. The ice cave you are heading to is quite high up so the views of this extremely rugged ice-domain are epic. Hiking to the cave takes around 15 to 20 minutes, then you are ready to stand inside the glacier, an experience which is totally unlike anything else! Falljökull is an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, the largest icecap in Europe, so a magnificent volume of ice stretches out from the cave. You get the chance to explore and take some photos, before glacier hiking back to the start, enjoying the views and the incredible Falljökull ice formations and sharp-ridged crevasses from a different vantage point. This is an ancient landscape carved out over millions of years.

Experience the inside of a natural ice cave

Returning to the parking lot at Skaftafell National Park you need to make sure you leave in good time for your journey to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. The distance is 56.6 km (35.17 mi), in winter this drive can take much longer than you think, so check out the road conditions before you decide how much time you need. It is also, important that you arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time of your tour. No one wants to miss chapter two of this great glacier day!

You will meet your tour guide at Jökulsárlón, who will drive you to the glacier and issue your equipment. You will be wearing a helmet, so it is good to have a thin hat which will fit underneath. Of course, ice caves are always cold so warm layers and a waterproof top layer will keep you comfortable for the 45 minutes you spend in the cave. This ice cave, in an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, is best known for its blue ice, almost everywhere you look you will see amazing shades of blue. It is also incredible to see how blue light permeates through fairly dense ice. The features in this cave are fabulous, although, naturally they vary from time to time. The majestic beauty of last week, may well be replaced by an even lovelier ice-masterpiece, crafted by nature alone. Many people describe entering this ice cave as being like walking into an ice-fairytale, thus, this part of your combo tour is named The Ice Queen. We will drive you back to Jökulsárlón after a truly epic glacier day which, quite simply, has it all!

Your glacier guide is an ice cave specialist, so he/she will decide which ice caves to visit. The most spectacular ice cave will always be chosen in each location. We only ever visit ice caves which are stable, so the weather and local conditions will always feature strongly in the choices we make. The safety of our guests is always of paramount importance to us. These ice caves are only accessible when the temperature has been below freezing for a long enough period, which is why we only go to them in the winter season. Even when a cave is stable there will still be changes in the ice features to be found within it. Sometimes they are spellbindingly beautiful, at other times they will be slightly less spectacular. These changes are all part of the excitement!
