Tour Description

Inside the Katla Ice Cave
If you like to collect rare experiences this Katla Ice Cave tour is the one for you. Katla volcano is shrouded beneath the Ice of Kötlujökull, a glacier tongue of Mýrdalsjökull glacier. In these parts no one can forget the presence of the fabled volcano, Katla, Kötlujökull literally means Katla´s glacier! Some of the most amazing ice caves Iceland can offer have formed in this incredibly blue glacier.

Putting on the crampons!
Starting out in Reykjavík you will pass through beautiful countryside and coastal areas, more participants might join the tour at some of the enchanting villages. The road is always threading a path between the mountains and the ocean, so you can expect spectacular views on the way to Vík. As your journey heads east we will take a turn inland, your Super Jeep adventure will take you over really rugged terrain, as mountain glacier landscapes loom around you. When you come to a halt the dramatic Kötlujökull glacier will be standing right before you, with its astonishingly strong blue colors and amazingly clear ice layers.
Strapping on our crampons we will head for the opening in the glacier and the magic moment when you step inside. You will be walking in between high and spellbindingly beautiful black and blue ice walls, as you explore more deeply within the glacier. You will come to an expansive area with an opening through which you can see the sky. At all times you are surrounded by shimmering snow and ice, the shapes, shades and forms are so beautiful it looks as though an incredibly talented ice artist has shaped them. Words cannot do justice to these sights which nature alone has fashioned!

Outside the Cave in the Winter Sun
Your guide will tell you all about the cave, you get time to wander around and take photographs. Before we board the sturdy Super Jeep there is a little time to explore around the sensational Kötlujökull mountains, perhaps we will find a smaller accessible cave?

Enjoying the scenery under the volcano
Stops are made at the village of Vík, as well as Seljalandsfoss & Skógafoss waterfalls on the journey back to Reykjavík. Skógafoss is a scintillating 60 m high waterfall has featured in folklore tales and legends, when you feel the special atmosphere which lingers here you will, perhaps, know the reason why! On the right side many steps lead to the top of the falls, the views from the top are amazing. Seljalandsfoss is the famous waterfall where you can walk behind the stream of water for a truly unique experience.
