katla volcano ice cave tour

Inside the Katla Ice Cave

If you like to collect rare experiences this Katla Ice Cave tour is the one for you. Katla volcano is shrouded beneath the Ice of Kötlujökull, a glacier tongue of Mýrdalsjökull glacier. In these parts no one can forget the presence of the fabled volcano, Katla, Kötlujökull literally means Katla´s glacier! Some of the most amazing ice caves Iceland can offer have formed in this incredibly blue glacier.

Putting on the crampons!

Starting out in Reykjavík you will pass through beautiful countryside and coastal areas, more participants might join the tour at some of the enchanting villages. The road is always threading a path between the mountains and the ocean, so you can expect spectacular views on the way to Vík. As your journey heads east we will take a turn inland, your Super Jeep adventure will take you over really rugged terrain, as mountain glacier landscapes loom around you. When you come to a halt the dramatic Kötlujökull glacier will be standing right before you, with its astonishingly strong blue colors and amazingly clear ice layers.

Strapping on our crampons we will head for the opening in the glacier and the magic moment when you step inside. You will be walking in between high and spellbindingly beautiful black and blue ice walls, as you explore more deeply within the glacier. You will come to an expansive area with an opening through which you can see the sky. At all times you are surrounded by shimmering snow and ice, the shapes, shades and forms are so beautiful it looks as though an incredibly talented ice artist has shaped them. Words cannot do justice to these sights which nature alone has fashioned!

Outside the Cave in the Winter Sun

Your guide will tell you all about the cave, you get time to wander around and take photographs. Before we board the sturdy Super Jeep there is a little time to explore around the sensational Kötlujökull mountains, perhaps we will find a smaller accessible cave?

One of the most memorable excursions I’ve been on

5 by Al Castillo 2018-03-22
The drive up to the cave was intense, helping pull other vehicles out of the snow and almost getting stuck ourselves, our driver was amazing though and was always able to find his way. The cave itself was an unforgettable experience, tour guides were very knowledgeable, very informative and also added good humor throughout the tour. Will absolutely recommend Extreme Iceland to others who visit. Thank you for an amazing experience

Simply perfect !

Our tour (Crystal Ice Cave) was cancelled due to a flooding so we were moved to another tour (The Ice Cave under the Volcano) which was just amazing ! The tour was not crowded, guides were very friendly. We are very happy to have been able to make this tour.

My husband and I enjoyed or Katla Ice Cave tour, our guide was friendly and answered all of our questions. We enjoyed the explanation of the glacier and volcano and he took us on a fun ride back when we used 4x4 up some hills! I would do another tour with them.

Amazing experience and photos

"A great experience. The staff is really knowledgeable about the glacier and local culture. We did it when it was slightly raining but it was still amazing. I highly recommend. We spent enough time in the cave to experience it all. My advice though would be to wear dark clothes since the water that drops from the ceiling is full of ashes so it'll stin your clothes and bags. Also maybe bring a head torch, I found that some areas could have been better lightened up."

An Experience Not to be Missed

"We took an Ice Adventure tour out of Vik on Sunday Septembe 23rd, 2018. To be honest, our expectations were not high about this tour as we had heard that September was not the best time of year to view the ice caves and we are not really the bus tour types, preferring to explore independently. I am happy to report that our experience was vastly better than our expectation. Our tour guide (sorry I can't remember his name) was fantastic. He was both informative as well as entertaining. The tour itself was extremely interesting. We enjoyed the off roading experience getting to and from the glacier as well as the cave exploration. This is something you would simply not be able to see independently without a guide. Inside the ice cave is a wonder. The natural ice formations are incredible to look at. This tour is not physically demanding and crampons, hard hats and flash lights are provided."

A wonderful Experience

Our group had a wonderful time on our tour. Our driver to the South was really nice and went out of his way to make sure we had a good time and was entertaining. The ice cave tour itself was magical and our tour guide was very knowledgeable. The group was small enough that it didn't feel cramped in the 4x4 to the glacier. One thing to note is that you should bring your own food, there was a little outpost we stopped at before switching vehicles where you could buy some snacks but you don't spend a lot of time there.

We so enjoyed our Ice Cave Tour! Ask for Helgi! Best tour guide!

This experience was incredible! Our guide was super funny and informative. He was born and raised in Iceland and had so much pride and was so willing to share stories! Even the drive there and back was fun! The ave is beautiful and unlike anything else I have ever seen. It was super easy to walk with the crampons and not difficult or strenuous at all. Would definitely recommend

Nice tour

Even though the driving time was much longer than the time we spent at the ice cave, the tour was still good - in particular for people that like offroad driving with an experienced driver. The cave was small but still impressive, and of course one needs to consider that the ice is constantly changing and the caves vary in sizes/depth etc. Our guide was nice, knowledgeable and used great ‘easy’ explanations.

Such a great tour! We had an incredible time and we were able to experience something really amazing! Booking the tour was simple and pick up at the site was easy. The tour guides were funny, knowledgeable, and full of so many interesting facts. The ride to the ice cave was fun, the scenery was breathtaking, and being able to explore the cave was just such a cool experience. Would definitely recommend to everyone!

Best Tour ever

5 by Kurfer 2018-11-04
Firts of all, our tour guide Magnus alias John was real fun. He made this trip very special and entertaining. Always good for a joke he was also well informed to answer questions. The drive to the cave was adventurous enough to pay for it but the cave itself was stunning as well as the environment around. All in all we were really glad booking this trip and I would say it was one of our highlights this holiday.

great tour with small group

5 by Stefan 2018-11-08
"we really liked the tour a lot. Even our teenage kids were happy with it. The ride in the big truck was a lot of fun and the tour guide gave a lot of information along the drive and during the stay at the cave. However, the cave was small (we expected it a bit larger) and we were 'through' really quickly. But our guide gave us lots of time to explore it again ourselves and take our time with taking pictures. We also made a short side step to a small waterfall nearby before driving back in the truck. The best was that we were a really small group (9) and so you had the feeling you're in the middle of nowhere. Very cool in comparison to overfilled attractions along the golden circle. We booked the tour from Vik (I'd recommend that) and it's well worth the money."

Great Tour of a Beautiful Location

I am so happy I booked this ice cave tour! It was an opportunity to see something in Iceland we would have never been able to drive or hike to on our own. The landscape was absolutely stunning and the ice cave was so pretty. The tour gives you clamp ons and lights so that is helpful. The only complaint was that it was hard to hear the tour guide at times. Our group was a bit large so a mic or something in the van would have been helpful. At first I thought the tour was a bit pricey, but compared to all the other tours and also for what we saw it was 100% worth it!

Great trip, even if the Ice Cave itself was a little small

"The trip in the super-jeep (don't refer to it as a bus!) was great fun, with some minor off-roading. The drive out to the ice cave was about 25 minutes and good fun with great scenery. Helped by the fact i got the front seat. I found the guide good fun to talk to with his dry Icelandic humour. The tour itself was well run and organised. I hadn't appreciated how DIRTY the glacier / ice-cave would be. There hadn't been any rain for a few days so everything was covered in this fine dust which actually made it hard to differentiate the mountains from the glacier. Also, the dust is REALLY fine and can blow in your eyes (i wouldn't recommend wearing contact lenses for this trip). Whilst it was cool to be in a cave of ice, especially where the walls are thinner and you can see light shining through, however the cave was actually more of a tunnel (with an opening both ends) and not that big. Overall, a worthwhile trip and glad i did it."

Awesome tour, great guide!

We loved this tour - our guide was great, and the experience was amazing! The drive out to the cave was exciting, and then the hike to the cave, and the nearby waterfall, were our favorite experience of our trip to Iceland.
