Hellisheidi mountain range
Bathe in a geothermal river
We will begin with a brisk hike up to the Hveradalir valley from the small town of Hveragerdi, which lies around 45km away from Reykjavik. Hveragerdi and the surrounding area is an oasis of natural beauty, lying on top of a geothermal area, which ensures that it is in bloom all year round. The bubbling hot streams, throw up plumes of white smoke all year round: making it a truly awe inspiring natural wonder, in and of its self. As we hike up the hot river (it takes about 45 minutes): you can drink in the steamy volcanic atmosphere, amongst luscious greenery and stunning Icelandic natural sights. The hike itself is relatively easy and will be of no difficulty for anyone over the age of 10, plus one of our friendly guides will always be on hand to help the less experienced in the group.
Once we reach the spot where the hot and cold springs join together, it’s time to hop in and relax in the incredible, naturally occurring bath. This is truly a once in a lifetime sauna experience: to the backdrop of magnificent natural beauty. Once you have had a good soak, we will make our way back to the town of Hveragerdi: the perfect end to a relaxing day.
Remember to bring...
- Warm, waterproof outdoor clothing is a must: head-gear, gloves, lunch, snacks and a water bottle are all crucial to you getting the most out of this experience.
- Please, also remember to bring a bathing suit and towel!
- As there is hiking involved in this tour, we strongly recommend bringing good hiking boots: this is particularly important during the winter months.
During the winter there might be ice and snow on the hiking path making the hike a little harder. Our guides make sure that everyone is safe and comfortable in these circumstances. We assess the conditions before each tour and provide crampons if necessary.
