Three hikes will take you to rugged mountains, lava fields, glaciers, and volcanoes. Prepare to soak in natural geothermal pools, climb up a colorful volcano, and explore glacier formations up close.

All three hiking tours feature different terrain and various landscapes, so no day on the tour will be the same. You’ll travel in modified Super Jeeps, get close to active volcanoes, and even get a chance to walk behind a waterfall!

Experienced guides will be by your side throughout the tour. They’ll tell you interesting facts about Icelandic nature, answer your questions, and ensure your safety.

In the heart of the highlands and in the geothermal valley of Fjallabak Nature Reserve rests Landmannalaugar basecamp. Landmannalaugar is most famous for its natural geothermal pools and rhyolite mountains. Hiking trails of various lengths and difficulty levels run in the area.

Our Landmannalaugar hike is 9km (5.6mi) long and takes around 4 hours. The hiking path runs through Laugahraun Lava Fields and Vondugil Canyon, all the way up to the summit of Mt. Brennisteinsalda. Sulfur spots have colored the sides of the Brennisteinsalda volcano in red, yellow, and brown.

The hike continues through Graenagil Canyon, nestled between Mt. Blàhnjùkur and Laugahraun lava field. If the weather allows, we’ll climb Blahnukur Volcano for a birds-eye view of the Landmannalaugar Valley and five different glaciers.

After the hike, we’ll soak in a natural hot spring. Geothermal water relaxes muscles, so it’s a great way to finish your active day. Don’t forget your bathing suit and a towel!

Day 2 - Thórsmörk Volcano Hike to Fimmvörðuháls Mountain Pass

Today we drive along the South Coast and deep into the Highlands to Thorsmork Valley. The road to Thorsmork runs through unabridged glacial rivers and uneven terrain. To reach the secluded valley nestled at the foot of Eyjafjallajokull Volcano and Myrdalsjokull Glacier, we’ll ride in modified 4x4 Super Jeeps.

Day Highlights

  • Thorsmork Valley
  • Fimmvörðuháls (e. Fimmvorduhals Pass)
  • Eyjafjallajökull Glacier Volcano
  • Magni and Modi Volcanic Craters
  • 4x4 Super Jeep Ride

  • Hotel breakfast

We’ll begin the hike from Basar Cabin, our basecamp at Thorsmork. The hike up to Fimmvörðuháls Mountain Pass takes around 6-8 hours and covers 16km (nearly 10 mi). The trail features views of glaciers, mountains, lava fields, and volcanoes. On a clear day, you’ll catch sight of the colorful Landmannalaugar Mountains.

Along the way, we’ll pass newly formed volcanic craters, Magni and Modi, named after the sons of Thor. The craters formed during the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010.

The volcano hike lifts us up around 800m (2,624ft) above sea level for unspoiled views of the Highlands.

After reaching the top of our trail, we’ll take the same route back to the basecamp. From here, the Super Jeeps will bring us to our accommodation in Hella.

Day 3 - Bilbo’s Glacier Adventures on Sólheimajökull

On this day, we’ll travel on the Ring Road route along the South Coast to Sólheimajökull Glacier. The glacier tongue is part of Iceland’s fourth-largest ice cap, Mýrdalsjökull Glacier. The name of the glacier actually translates to “Home of the Sun.”

Day Highlights

  • Sólheimajökull Glacier
  • Glacier Hike
  • Skógafoss Waterfall
  • Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

  • Hotel breakfast
  • Guided glacier hike
  • All required safety equipment

Our junior guide Bilbo, a clever Samoyed puppy, has discovered exciting features on the glacier. Our experienced guides will help you safely explore moulins, crevasses, and sinkholes on the rugged surface of the Sólheimajökull Glacier.

The Sólheimajökull tour is suitable for everyone with an average fitness level. During the hike, you’ll use crampons, harnesses, and ice axes. Your guide will provide all the required safety equipment and show you how to use it.

During the hike, you’ll learn exciting facts about the glaciers. The guide will tell you about the geology and history of Icelandic ice caps and you’ll see what effect climate change has on Icelandic nature.

On the way back, we’ll stop to visit two waterfalls: Seljalandsfoss and  Skógafoss. Located along the South Coast, Seljalandsfoss is a waterfall with a 60-meter cascade you can actually walk behind!  And Skógafoss is a mighty waterfall you’ll want to remember, so don’t forget to bring your camera.
