Horse Riding - Power of Creation

Day-by-day itinerary: East – West

Monday: Arrival in Iceland – Keflavík Airport – Reykjavík

Individual transfer with Flybus from Keflavík Airport to your hotel in Reykjavik. (Included in price). Welcome meeting at Íshestar riding center with light dinner and meet you fellow riders. Pick up for the welcome meeting at 18:00 at included hotel.

Tuesday: Reykjavík –Skaftárdalur- Leiðólfsfell – Lakagígar - Skaftárdalur Farm

Pick up in the morning at the hotel for the drive to Skaftárdalur farm where we meet staff and horses. Please dress already in riding clothes. We follow old trails towards Mt. Leiðólfsfell, reaching high above fertile grassland. At this place we experience close encounters with the huge lava fields from the devastating Laki eruption. About 135 craters erupted on a huge fissure and they covered the area with lava and the whole country with ashes for about two years. Animals succumbed to hunger or volcanic poisoning, a large part of the human population died and only 38.500 people survived the disaster. We take another route back to Skaftárdalur where we spend the night in summer cottages. (45 km)

Wednesday: Skaftárdalur – Lambaskarðshólar

We continue our ride in the area that was most effected by the Skaftáreldar eruption in the 18th century, when the river canyons were filled by lava, causing the water to cascade on top of the lava field since. We follow Skaftá River up into the mountains towards Lambaskarðshólar cabin where we spend the night. Hot showers are available. This is a short riding day and our horses get some rest in the afternoon, while we enjoy the beautiful nature at the cabin. It is only a short walk to Silfurfoss waterfall, also called “little Gullfoss”. (25 km)

Thursday: Lambaskarðshólar – Glacier Mýrdalsjökull – Emstrur

This is our longest riding day that features an ever changing landscape. On our ride we cross several small glacier fed rivers and ride past Lake Álftavatn and through the Álftavatnskrókur grazing area. We continue along the Fjallabak Trail across Mælifellssandur, a black sand desert north of Mýrdalsjökull Glacier. We end our day in the Emstrur area. This sensitive grazing area in the highlands pleases our horses and we spend the night in a mountain cabin. Many of our clients in the old days told us that this is a day they will never forget. (55 km)

Friday: Emstrur – Einhyrningur

Today we explore the scenic Emstrur area some more. We leave the herd behind at the cabin and ride on individual horses into the beautiful Botnar valley. Here we stop at a cave used in earlier times as a shelter for farmers when gathering the sheep. Before heading back to the cabin we stop at a hilltop and enjoy the great view of Mýrdalsjökull Clacier and the notorious Katla crater. We continue our ride with the herd and cross mighty Markarfljót River (on a bridge) on our way to Einhyrningur mountain cabin where we spend the night. (30 km)

Saturday: Einhyrningur – Eyvindarmúli Farm - Núpar

Enjoy the great view of Eyjafjallajökull Glacier and Thórsmörk Nature Park on our way down from the mountains. We ride alongside the Markarfljót River and into the historical Fljótshlíð area. Eyvindarmúli farm is home to our horses and hosts and we release the horses into the meadows after yet another exciting last riding day. Accommodation at Núpar. (25 km)

Sunday: Núpar- Gullfoss - Geysir– Reykjavík

Transfer back to the Capital area for the last overnight stay. We visit the well-known sights of Iceland, Geysir hot spring area and Gullfoss waterfall on our way to Reykjavík. Return to Reykjavík at approx. 15:00.

Monday: Departure from Iceland – Reykjavík – Keflavík Airport
