Silfra Snorkeling Tour
Silfra offers a truly mesmerizing snorkelling experience and its combination of a unique location and crystal clear water, means that Silfra is constantly rated as one of the world’s best diving sites.
Firstly the Silfra Fissure is actually a gap between two continental plates: meaning that you will be snorkelling between two continents! These tectonic plates, the Eurasian and the North American, are still moving apart at a rate of 2cm a year. Every other place in the world where there is a gap between continental plates, it's far too deep to consider diving in, making Silfra a genuinely unique experience and definitely something that everyone will want to cross off their bucket list.
This is combined with the best water visibility anywhere in the world: in Silfra you will be able to see 100m into the distance. This is because; the water from Silfra comes from Langjökull (the Long Glacier) and is then filtered on its journey through the lava rock, which can take between 50 and 100 years. In fact, the water from Silfra is so pure that you can drink it at any time during your dive!
One might expect such pure water to be devoid of interesting sites, but that isn’t the case at Silfra: there are a myriad of colourful marine plants and Algae, adding a majestic jewel like colours to this electric blue world.
Silfra is divided into four sections, each with its own unique characteristics. You will begin in the Silfra Crack, which is literally the gap between the two tectonic plates: perhaps you will swim from continent to continent? From there you go to Silfra hall, where you can look down at the boulders and rock formations beneath: or swim in between them if you fancy a closer look. From there it’s on to Silfra Cathedral, a truly splendid cave: you will be able to see the entire length of this 100m structure and gaze at the dramatic rock formations on the walls. When you see it, you will understand the name: its beguiling beauty borders on the divine. From there you will enter the lagoon, which measures 120m and is the best example of Silfra’s stunning crystal clear water: completing your once in a lifetime dive.
Our friendly qualified diving specialists will guide you through this magnificent blue world: ensuring that you have all the equipment and information that you need. The water temperature at Silfra, usually stands between 2 and 4 degrees, but don’t worry, you will be well insulated in your dry-suit. Silfra is perfect for everyone: whether be you a beginner or a veteran. So don’t delay, book your trip to Silfra today, for the most incredible diving experience that you will ever have.
We try to offer everybody who snorkels in Silfra the chance to have their photo taken, whilst experiencing the wonders of Silfra (and most people take us up on the offer, in such a stunning and unique setting). You can buy the photos at the end of the tour for 3900 ISK, using either cards or cash. Just make sure to let your friendly guide know once you get there.
You won’t be able to wear glasses underneath your snorkelling mask, whilst you are in the water. So if you need glasses then we recommend that you make alternative arrangements: either acquiring a prescription mask or using contact lenses on the tour.
