Tour Description

aerial reynisfjara black sand beach

Reynisfjara black sand beach seen from above.

After pickup we drive out of Reykjavik, past Hellisheidi Geothermal Power plant. You will see the water vapors rising to the air. We drive along the south coast all the way to Hvolsvollur town, the first stop.

We continue along the coast to the magnificent Seljalandsfoss waterfall. It is possible to walk behind the waterfall and experience some hidden magic in the small cave there. You might even see a double rainbow if you are lucky. This waterfall is so amazing that Justin Bieber shot a music video there ;)

basalt rock cave reynisfjara

The small cave at Reynisfjara beach, and the natural basalt columns.

Since waterfalls are awesome, we now drive to the next waterfall which is called Skogafoss. This is one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland with a drop of around 60m / 200ft. This waterfall constantly produces colorful rainbows on sunny days, and double rainbows are its specialty. This waterfall is also a Hollywood movie star, it appeared in the movies Thor: The Dark World and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. And of course it appeared in Justin Bieber's music video.

Enough waterfalls, now its time for some food. We drive to the small town Vik, where we have lunch. We will have a good view over the beautiful ocean cliffs called Reynisdrangar. Spectacular scenery with a black sand beach, ocean and mountain cliffs.

icelandic seal glacier lagoon

A seal, chilling on a floating iceberg at the glacier lagoon.

At last, the main event. We drive to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. This lagoon is the biggest star of them all, and has appeared in many movies. To name a few: Batman Begins and the James Bond movies: A View to a Kill and Die Another Day. We spend some time here and enjoy the magnificent scenery. Those who booked a boat tour can now go and sail among the icebergs.

Those who did not book a boat tour can go visit Crystal Beach, a nearby black sand beach where you can usually find small icebergs (crystals) that have washed ashore. Another possibility is to take a short hike along the glacier lagoon. Here is where we meet the second guide.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall

Seljalandsfoss waterfall

After the lagoon we drive to Skaftafell national park. Here we have dinner, and enjoy the view over the glaciers. Good times :)

Lets go to the beach. We drive to the exciting Reynisfjara black sand beach. Be sure to visit the small cave (if the guide and conditions allow), you can see natural basalt columns all around the cave. Exciting stuff. You can also see Reynisdrangar ocean cliffs from the beach, from a different angle than before.

Note: Be careful at the beach and pay attention to what the guide says, since the ocean waves can be sneaky and dangerous. Do not walk all the way to the ocean!

After a stroll on the beach we head back to Reykjavik. We should be home before midnight.

vik in myrdalur village

Vik town, and in the distance you can see Reynisdrangar ocean cliffs.

Double the fun. Since this is a long day tour, you will get two separate guides (the guide can only drive for so long). One guide takes you all the way to Jokulsarlon, where you will meet the second guide. That guide will then take you back to Reykjavik. We don't want our guides to work for 15 hours straight, and we hope that this arrangement makes the tour more enjoyable :)

Amphibian Boat Tour

As an optional extra you can book an amphibian boat tour on Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon. The boat ride takes around 30 minutes. See booking engine for prices.

Great Outing with a Knowledgeable Guide!

5 by Verified customer 2017-06-06
This was a very long day and the weather did not cooperate, but even so, we thought it was wonderful and worth every penny. We had Sindri for our guide and found him to be extremely knowledgeable, informative and willing to share his knowledge with his clients and answer questions. A query regarding Bobby Fischer led to an interesting discussion about his years in Iceland and a general discussion about chess in general and its popularity in Iceland. As well, Sindri was kind enough to point out the Bobby Fischer Centre to us when we passed through Selfoss. Yes, we could have rented a car and driven ourselves out to Jokulsarlon but then we would have missed out on all the history, geology and geography and people stories, not to mention the discussions that ranged from Icelandic sheep, cows, horses to reindeer to polar bears. The stops we made were all very scenic and very enjoyable. We live in western Canada and have more than our fair share of boreal forest, mountains, lakes, waterfalls and glaciers in our own backyard, so to speak, but this was the first time I have ever walked behind a waterfall or gotten up close and personal with a bunch of icebergs or seen and walked on a black sand beach. This is a great tour!

Great tour for the time poor. Do the 2 day one if you can.

Everything ran smoothly. Our second guide that took over in the afternoon went over and above and showed us more interesting sites, resulting in a longer tour, but perfect! Will highly recommend your company to our clients as we are owners of a travel agency. Many Thanks

Very good tour
