New Years Traditions
Bonfires and fireworks are part of the tradition of Iceland’s new year celebrations, but you may have noticed that this tour finishes at 11pm and not after midnight - like you’d expect for a new years party!
The ‘Ármótabrenna’ (bonfires) tend to wind down at around 10 pm because at 10.30 “Áramótaskaupið” airs on TV. This show is a satirical reflection on the news events of the last 12 months, and a staggering 90-95% of the population stay in to watch it!
After the show, backyard firework displays tend to start up. The fireworks display is provided by the people of Reykjavík, not funded by the city. Fireworks are huge in Iceland! Apparently some people spend up to an entire months salary on them! In fact together Icelanders buy over 500 tons of fireworks just for this night!
We wish you a Happy New Year for 2019 and a fantastic vacation in Iceland!
