A visit to Vatnajokull will allow you to truly appreciate why Iceland is known as the land of fire and ice.
This tour is a combination of two activities:
- a boat ride across a glacier lagoon and
- a glacier hike in Skaftafell Nature Reserve.
1.) The first part, the glacier lagoon ride has two variations: you have the option of riding a zodiac boat on either Jökulsárlón or Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon. Choose between the two variations in the booking widget. Upon booking, you will receive a confirmation voucher that includes important information such as your meeting points and meeting times.
2.) The second part of the tour, the glacier hikes takes place in Skaftafell Nature Reserve. Please note that transportation between the glacier lagoon and Skaftafell is not included, the drive will take about 40-50 minutes.
Glacier Lagoon Zodiac Boat Ride, Option 1: Jökulsárlón
Your expert guide will greet you in the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon parking lot and take you to the dock. We’ll equip you with a flotation suit or life vest and then hop aboard the zodiacs and start our adventure on Jökulsárlón. As we cast off expect to enjoy some majestic views of Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and Vatnajökull rising on the horizon.
The zodiacs will take us into the center of the lagoon – a wonderland of shimmering icebergs. Expect to see vividly colored ice, unlike anything that you've ever seen before, including vivid shades of blue and crystal-clear ice that is illuminated by the sun's rays. We can honestly say that we've never met someone who wasn't wowed by the beauty of these magnificent lumps of frozen water!
Our zodiacs are specially designed for maneuverability – allowing us to get thrillingly close to the icebergs. Look closely and you’ll see streaks of volcanic ash running through them – a fascinating reminder of why Iceland is the land of fire and ice!
Jökulsárlón is also a wildlife lover’s paradise, so look out for the curious seals who bob in and out of the icebergs. It’s also great for bird lovers – who are sure to enjoy the acrobatic arctic terns, along with the huge seagulls and arctic skuas.
The wonders don’t end once we’re back on dry land – there’re still a host of other optional attractions that merit your attention. You can take a closer look at Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, or simply appreciate the many volcanoes and mountains that punctuate the skyline. We also recommend walking down to the world-famous Diamond Beach – a coal-black natural wonder that is dotted with a multitude of glimmering icebergs. You probably recognize it – the Diamond Beach is one of the most photographed places in the world!
Glacier Lagoon Zodiac Boat Ride, Option 2: Fjallsárlón
As an alternative of Jokulsarlon, you can choose another scenic glacier lagoon for your Zodiac boat ride. 10 kilometers southwest of Jokulsarlon, you will find another stunning glacier lagoon hidden off the beaten path named Fjallsarlon. Originating from Vatnajokull, Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon is less visited and equally beautiful as its tranquility provides an ethereal world for boat rides. The huge icebergs break away from the glacier tongue of Fjallsjokull before falling into the lagoon. As a smaller glacier lagoon, the floating icebergs look giant, making the boat trip immersive and exciting.
The appearance of Fjallsarlon is somewhat different from Jokulsarlon. The water is a bit browner due to the floating icebergs stirring the bottom of the lake, making a dramatic contrast between water and ice. Being a smaller glacier lake, Fjallsarlon allows visitors to see icebergs up close, especially for boat riders, you will get a better chance to see Vatnajokull’s glacier tongue in a closer distance. The boat trip is captivating for nature lovers who enjoy Iceland’s untouched landscapes.
Fjallsarlon is also a sanctuary of diverse wildlife including many species of birds. You will be surrounded by its pure serenity as the glacier lagoon extends to the edge of the massive glacier tongue.
Glacier Hike in Skaftafell
After the glacier lagoon boat ride, you'll need to drive to the meeting location of the second part of the tour. You qualified glacier guide will meet you at the Skaftafell Booking Center in Vatnajökull National Park and take you to Falljökull glacier, where your adventure begins.
We'll begin with an easy hike to the summit of the glacier – a magical adventure through some of the most impressive glacial scenery in the world. When we reach the glacier's summit – prepare for one of the greatest views in the world, which features mountain peaks, glacial tongues, and capricious volcanoes.
Your knowledgeable guide will show you Virkisjökull glacier and the amazing patterns that its constant movement has cut into the landscape. They’ll also tell you fascinating facts about glaciers and how they have created the amazing landscapes that you’re seeing. While also telling you about what the future might hold for these icy natural wonders. Then, get ready for the glacier hike itself!
As soon as you step onto the glacier – you'll be greeted by an otherworldly landscape that is created by the constant movement of the glacier. We'll wind our way through the meandering crevasses and deep moulins, which bore right down into the icy heart of the glacier. You can also expect to see dramatic ice sculptures, stunning icefalls, and Hvannadalshnúkur, Iceland’s tallest peak. It’s unlike anywhere else in the world and a must for every bucket list!
Your safety is our top priority. Glacier tours can be hazardous, and you have to obey the glacier guide and the boat guide at all times. At the start of the tour, one of our glacier experts will give you a safety briefing and tell you a little bit about the history of glaciers. This wonderful talk will perfectly prepare you for your glacial adventure: contextualizing all the amazing sites that you are about to see. After that we will start the scenic walk along the valley where your expert guide will explain all the unique and wonderful features of Falljökull and Virkisjökull glaciers and their surroundings.
Please note: The departure for the glacier hike is from our Skaftafell booking center (gray house with the turf roof). Skaftafell is located 327km (203 miles) from Reykjavík. The nearest towns to Skaftafell are Kirkjubæjarklaustur, 69km to the west and Höfn, 130km to the east.
