Warm outdoor clothing, waterproof jacket and pants, head-wear and gloves. Good sturdy hiking boots are essential to fit the crampons (can also be rented).
On the Glacier Grand Slam tour we will visit some of the most incredible sites that Iceland has to offer at the historic Vatnajokull National Park: one of the largest national parks in all of Europe. Vatnajokull National Park combines Iceland’s two most famous features: massive glaciers and ongoing geothermal activity. A visit to Vatnajokull, will allow you to truly appreciate why Iceland is known as the land of fire and ice.
Zodiac boat ride
We kick the day off with a zodiac boat ride. You will make your own way to the secluded Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon: a hidden jewel and local favorite. Once at Fjallsárlón, you will take the 45 minute Zodiac boat tour, gliding among the multitude of vast icebergs from Europe’s largest glacial mass. The vivid blue, crystal clear water will take your breath away. Fjallsárlón, provides an unforgettable end to an unforgettable day.
After the Zodiac ride, you head on to our meeting point in the Skaftafell Booking center at 14:20 (2:20 p.m.). Once there, we drive to the glacier's edge. We will get geared up and begin our ascent up the icy but easily accessible slopes of Falljökull. Fallokull is one of the many outlet glaciers from Vatnajokull ice cap, Europe's largest glacier. The glacier itself is in a state of constant flux: constantly re-inventing itself across the eons and we will see all these magnificent and temporary structures in the flesh.
Once we reach the summit of Falljokull we will see one of the most unique and majestic sights in all of Iceland: an ancient icefall gradually falling from the very peak of the mountain to the ocean below. We will also have views of Virkisjökull, another outlet glacier from Vatnajokull. It's a profound location and will give you a new perspective on the power of nature.
Your safety is our top priority. Glacier tours can be hazardous, and you have to obey the glacier guide and the boat guide at all times. At the start of the tour, one of our glacier experts will give you a safety briefing and tell you a little bit about the history of glaciers. This wonderful talk will perfectly prepare you for your glacial adventure: contextualizing all the amazing sites that you are about to see. After that we will start the scenic walk along the valley where your expert guide will explain all the unique and wonderful features of Falljökull and Virkisjökull glaciers and their surroundings.
Please note: The departure for the glacier hike is from our Skaftafell booking center (gray house with the turf roof). Skaftafell is located 327km (203 miles) from Reykjavík. The nearest towns to Skaftafell are Kirkjubæjarklaustur, 69km to the west and Höfn, 130km to the east.
