Solheimajokull glacier is a spectacular tongue of ice that flows down from Myrdalsjokull, the fourth largest glacier in Iceland. Travel through the south Iceland farming lands to the black sand beaches, thundering waterfalls, powerful volcanoes and majestic glaciers on Iceland´s south coast.
The first stop is at Seljalandsfoss waterfall where we can walk behind this magnificent wall of water.
Glacier Hike on Solheimajokull
After the excitement of Seljalandsfoss and getting a little bit wet, you should be ready for the glacier hike.
A very pretty waterfall, Seljalandsfoss
We gear you up with crampons and go over safety features before we set foot on the glacier. Sólheimajökull glacier is a part of Mýrdalsjökull, Iceland‘s fourth largest glacier that covers the infamous volcano Katla.
We spend one hour hiking on the glacier. This is not that difficult, but sometimes there is a 30 minute walk to the glacier (depending on conditions). The glacier hike should be suitable for all over the age of ten that are comfortable walking on uneven surfaces.
Walking on the glacier is a unique experience
The black-sand beach and Skogafoss
Then onwards for a leisurely stroll along the black sand beach of Reynisfjara. This beach features stacks of basalt columns that wall off surrounding cliffs scattered with caves.
Offshore you will see Reynisdrangar pillars, basalt rock stacks that rise from the sea. Icelandic legend says they were trolls turned into rock by the rising sun when they came home late after a fishing trip. We round off this great sightseeing tour with a stop at the Skógafoss waterfall.
The black sand beach Reynisfjara
On a clear day you may have a good view of famous volcanoes, Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull. When we drive under the foothills of Eyjafjallajökull you can get a glimpse of the Westman Islands, rising steeply from the ocean just a few kilometres off the coast.
This tour is great value and easy with an adventurous twist. Sights are breathtaking and where else in the world can you stand on the ice of a glacier, walk behind a waterfall and stroll along a volcanic black sand beach on the same day?

We had an absolutely amazing experience! Awesome group of 13 in the minibus was perfect and Ash was the best tour guide ever! Despite the poor weather, Ash made sure we got the absolute maximum out of our trip and the experience in the glaciers and ice caves is something I will treasure for life! I've already recommended this tour to a lot of friends and I hope they will do it at some point. The only suggestion I would make is if the tour could start an hour earlier so that you could also add in a stop at the plane wreck since we didn't get to go there even though we were quite close to it. But otherwise, thank you so much Ash for making this such a memorable and fun experience!
The sensational south guide was Alvero, sorry we cannot remember the name of the Northern lights guide. They both provided fabulous tours. Their knowledge & enthusiasm made for an extremely interesting and informative day & night.
This tour was the highlight of our holiday! We had a chance to go to the waterfalls and the black sand beach but it was the glacier walk that was the most amazing part. This was largely due to our guide for the day, Alvero who had such enthusiasm and knowledge that he made it a day we will not forget. The Northern Lights tour in the evening was also really enjoyable even though the lights didn't put in an appearance. Again our guide (whose name we didn't get) was very entertaining with tales of local myths and legends. If you do one tour on your visit to Iceland we would recommend this one for sure!
Rosa was our guide for this tour and she was fantastic. I loved her stories on the folklore of Iceland!
Kristjan was our guide for the other days of the trip (1st-5th Feb) and he was truly amazing. I've had the hardest time being back in the UK because he made it feel like home. Honestly nothing to improve, it was just wonderful. Thank you!
The tour guide (Hathor) was wonderful!
We had such a wonderful guide who ensured we were safe and enjoying our adventure. The tour was well paced and I felt we had the appropriate amount of time at each stop. I enjoyed the Icelandic music our guide played in the bus and all of the fun facts he had to share. The only thing that could make the experience even better would be wifi and cell phone chargers on the bus and perhaps some free refreshments! Overall it was a spectacular experience that I will recommend to friends and family!
The tour was very enjoyable, I liked our guide and the experience over all. Although the only downfall was that of mother nature, not allowing for the glacier hike portion of the tour.
Really enjoyed our trip. Our guide, Athor, was brilliant. Very knowledgeable and very funny too! I have already recommended this trip to a colleague visiting Iceland.
Our tour guide, Ash, was wonderful. He kept us updated on weather conditions and planned our arrival time at different locations based on how we could best experience everything and avoid the unfavorable weather as much as possible. Ash also found an ice cave for us to enter at the glacier and it was absolutely stunning; other friends who visited the same glacier on the same day on different tours did not get to experience this.
A recommendation would be to recommend to future travelers to bring a change of clothes on this tour in the winter - even with waterproof clothing, we got soaked at the waterfalls and the black sand beach and it was impossible to dry off between stops.
Our guide Teitur was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable, friendly and funny. He never rushed and we had plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful landscape. Top marks to him!
A friend of mine had gone on a trip with your company before we did - recommendations do work!
Holly's knowledge on geology made our trip much more informative and enjoyable. We learned so fun from her!
Great tour guide! Informative and personable. We had enough time to see all the sites. Glacier hike was amazing! Would definitely recommend to friends.
Excellent guide Bjorn. Very informative and helpful. A great tour and a day to remember for everyone. He even doubled back to the hotel to drop off a pair of boots that were left on the coach.
Holly was amazing! Loved the Viking restaurant experience as well
Just wish the weather would have been better and we could have done the ice caves! Maybe next time!
It was awesome even in a rainy day.
My wife and I really enjoyed the tour! Arron did a great job and went far above and beyond what we were expecting! He was able to fit a lot into a short day.
No Northern Lights unfortunately, but very easy to work with the back office to try and reschedule.
Aron was lovely and I had such a great time! Will book again the next time I'm in Iceland!
This was an awesome tour! The guide was very knowledgeable about Iceland and made the tour great. The glacier hike was my favorite. Pick up and drop off was on time with no issues. I have no complaints!
David was a spectacular tour guide. We were able to see stunning sites as he navigated unexpected weather. This was an adventure that we will never forgot. Thank you and we hope to see you again in the future.
I was happy that we were able to do what we did, even if weather did not permit a glacier hike at the time that it was probably planed. I was just really glad and know that we were lucky that the ice cave worked out. Even though the super-jeep broke down on the glacier - losing time and forcing us to rush on our way back-it was super fun and such things happen.
David was excellent. Knowledgeable and fun.
One of the best tours I've ever been on. Thank you for doing everything to make sure we have a great memorable experience! I will definitely go with Extreme Iceland again on my next visit.
Hawk was great--he gave us lots of history, background and kept things interesting.
Great guides and the small group setting made the experience one for a lifetime.
The sensational Iceland tour was fantastic, friendly approachable and knowledgable guide with a great sense of humour that made the tour really fun and exciting.
Thank you Arman for a great sensational Iceland tour!
Loved every minute of the tour! The glacier hike and crevasse adventure was a definite high point and nice surprise. Even though it was a blizzard on the black sand beach, it made for great pictures and wonderful story to share. The tour operators were great about re-scheduling the Northern Lights portion due to weather conditions and eventually canceling and refunding our money for that. I will be back and use Extreme Iceland again!
Jóhannes our tour guide was very informative, pointing out important landscape
features. We had a very good time! Thank you for making our trip a unforgettable experience.
Mike & Lysane
Bjorn was an incredible guide. He was incredibly knowledgeable, charismatic, and made every part of the tour enjoyable. He made us feel safe and secure in all aspects of the hike. I would gladly pay to be on a tour with him as the guide again. 10/10.
Tetur was a knowledgable and entertaining guide, and we were very fortunate to have good weather that day. Great experience overall!
Loved every minute of it and wish I could hike a glacier everyday!!!!
Our tour guide "Diddy" went above and beyond to make our trip memorable. The weather was really rough so we could not do the glacier hike, but he took us to other places to make up for it and see some sights we never would have found ourselves. His driving was also impeccable. We learned a ton on the tour and the sights were gorgeous - highly recommend!
I loved it.
The northern lights tour was only ok. But maybe that's cause we didn't see anything.
Our tourguide's name was ""Diddy"" and he was AMAZING!!! He was always engaging the group, creating a fun learning atmosphere with each back story and history of Iceland, and we all could tell that he knew when to go to which site for the best experience (ex: he explained why we would see the last waterfall in the afternoon for less tourists and better sunlight)! He was absolutely wonderful during the hike and at the end gave us the best recommendation for dinner! His advice to check out Seafood Grille was perfect, that was the best meal we'd had during our week in Iceland!
Thank you Diddy and Extreme Iceland for such an awesome guide!
Unfortunately I did not understand all the explanations of the city guide because of his accent. But he was really nice so I do not want to blame him.
Lisa was wonderful on the glacier hike, she helped me navigate in very bad weather.
THe one suggestion I have is that it would have been helpful to have more assistance for the group in getting on the equipment as the weather was really bad.
Great tour guide, had enough time at each place, everything well explained, loved it!
The tour was wonderful and a fantastic memory. Our tour guide, Mimir, was excellent.
Glacier hiking was the best highlight of the tour. Diddy was the driver/tour guide that shared many Icelandic facts and info we found interesting. As for the glacier hike, we had Bjorn as our guide. I don't do well on inclines and hiking. I'm also a 5'-0"" petite female and I take tiny steps. Appreciate Bjorn's attentiveness as a guide to have the group match my pace in hiking up the glacier. He also had me by his side. I didn't have to worry about lagging behind trying to catch up. I really had a great and delightful experience. If I could thank him again, I would.
Thanks Extreme Iceland for having a great staff.
I have recommended your glacier hike to several friends who are planning trips to Iceland.
Very well organized, tour guide was great. Very exciting and The day I decide to comeback to Iceland I will book my tour with Extreme Iceland again.
Tour was amazing and the tour guide was super knowledgeable, friendly, and overall awesome.
The tour guide was very knowledgeable and engaging. Due to his experience and the flexibility of the small group tour size, he was able to rearrange some of the tour stops in order to ensure low traffic times at some of the stops and allow for a few additional stops not listed in the itinerary. In general, all of the stops were very exciting, and my boyfriend and I had an amazing experience.
Great tour, very sympathetic tour guide (Alvaro).
Especially the tour on the glacier was amazing.
I had an absolutely increidible day with extreme Iceland. It was just me and one other person, which made the tour very personalized and engaging. I would recommend this tour to anyone looking to have a superb day!
Understanding that the weather was pretty uncooperative, I found it disappointing that some excursions had to be cut short due to other people not preparing for the forecasted weather conditions. In the future, I would recommend turning those people away for the betterment of the entire tour and for safety reasons.
Otherwise, it was a great tour and the tour guide was exceptional!
We have a great day in Iceland with your guide Dan.
We got to see some amazing places all in one day without feeling that we where being rushed.
All and all a tour we would recommend to others.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. The glacier walk was definitely the highlight, but the black sand beach and waterfalls were breathtaking. Our guide, Bjorn, was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. He kept us informed all throughout the trip. As we were driving from destination to destination he told us a bit of Icelandic history and folklore. Thanks, Extreme Iceland for such a wonderful time!
Incredible tour-beautiful waterfalls, unbelievable glacier views. Felt very safe the whole time and learned so much!
Had a lovely tour-- my only comment was that the time at the black sand beach seemed longer than we needed. More time a the other falls would have been nice. I understand it was a dinner time for thE driver, so I don't begrudge it.. just a thought. I loved the tour as a whole.
The tour exceeded my expectations. I would definitely recommend it.
My group of three had an awesome time - climbing up the side of one waterfall and waking behind another! And then experiencing an easy climb onto a glacier. We finished our tour with a trip to the ocean to see the black stones and basalt formations! Truly amazing!!!
Christian, ou guide came to pick us up at the port where our ship docked. Our guide commented the most important points, stopped when required. For sure you can never predict the weather in Iceland, therefore any weather is nice. We walked on the glacier, walked on the black sand beach visited a couple of waterfalls. Overall, it was a fantastic experience. The only point we were questioning, it seemed that everyone had the opportunity to borrow the hiking boots and created a bit of confusion in my head. Christian asked us if we brought the boots back??? Was there a pair of hiking boots reserved for us in the bus???
beside that, We have no negative point at all and recommend this tour. We saw things we never saw before, we did things that we never did before. I took a lot of pictures as there was time for it. Thank you so much for this day we had.
Rob was a fantastic guide. We learned a ton and had a great adventure!
We enjoyed the whole tour very much, it one of the best things we did while in Iceland. Besides being well organized it had the right amount of pauses and just about the right amount of time to visit the sites making the day relaxing, not rushed.
Our tour guide was fantastic, he was very knowledgeable about everything and made the tour interesting and fun.
The places we visited were spectacular, but I think it was our guide that added the special touch to this memorable day.
Carla, Carrie, Carlo, Maurizio.
The time walking on the glacier was too short. We could barely see a few things and we returned to the base camp.
With half an hour more it would be perfect
This was a great tour and glad to see so many sights in one day. Other than the late pick-up from our Airbnb (almost 30 min. behind), everything was on time. Karolis, our tour guide on the glacier hike, was very helpful and informative. He always had our safety in mind and provided excellent facts and commentary that exceeded our expectations. Thanks for a wonderful experience!
Diddi was our tour guide/bus driver who was extremely personable, knowledgable, and did an overall great job. Joe was our guide for the glacier hike. He kept everyone safe, we had an unbelievable experience, and would not hesitate to do it again. One of the best tours/experiences of our trip to Iceland. Would recommend to anyone and everyone.
Everything was fantastic. The tour guide (Kristof? I'm not sure how he spells his name) was wonderful. Everything was great.
Scott was a great guide, he was funny and knowledgeable, really wanted us to enjoy the tour. Will certainly recommend this tour and use your service again when I visit next!
We were picked up on time and guide was very funny, knowledgeable and friendly. We felt sufficient time was allotted for each location. Our guide on glacier hike (Bori?) was excellent. He thoroughly explained how to use the crampons, equipment, safely navigating the glacier. He shared lots of great information along the way.
Things I wish had been different: The seats on the bus were very small and cramped. I'm a petite 5ft women but my husband is over 6ft and so my legs were falling off side of foot rest since not enough room for both of us. The storage area above our seats were too small to even accommodate my backpack which I rested on my seat or lap entire trip. I also did not anticipate how intense the glacier hike would be. I even went back to website thinking I missed some information. I have been physically active my entire life and in moderate condition and really struggled to complete this hike.
The tour was great- definitely our favorite day of our trip. The guide was great - funny and informative. The glacier walk was absolutely the highlight - I'm so glad we did this tour!
I couldn't recommend this tour enough. My Wife and I had an amazing time.
