Tour Description

reynisfjara iceland

Admire the view of Reynisfjara at night

We depart from Reykjavík driving east up onto the Mid Atlantic Ridge, through rugged lava fields, past a geothermal power plant giving the area a mystic atmosphere filled with the 'sweet' smell of sulphur. We continue over a mountain pass to the lowland South Iceland area. We pass the steaming town of Hveragerdi (Hot spring garden) with its many greenhouses as the tour continues through the largest agricultural area of Iceland. Icelandic horses (not ponies !) are grazing in the many fields we pass and offer inviting photo opportunities.

Approaching the Eyjafjoll (Island mountains) we have views to the Westman Islands and the infamous Eyjafjallajokull volcano that erupted in 2010. The magnificent 60 m (200 ft) high waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss cascade down the sides of Eyjafjoll and offer unique opportunities for getting up close and personal. But don't worry, we'll visit them on our way back to Reykjavik.

seljalandsfoss waterfall south iceland

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall is a waterfall which you can walk behind :)

Glacier Solheimajokull

We get right down to business by heading through the south coast and drive straight to the magnificent Solheimajokull glacier, an outlet glacier from Myrdalsjokull, the fourth largest glacier in Iceland. We detour to the edge of the glacier and take a short walk to experience the unique formations of the landscape of ice, mountains and water.

The Black Beach Reynisfjara

Our next destination is the dramatic black sand beach Reynisfjara. Powerful waves have hammered the shore and basalt cliffs giving shape to some of the most famous natural wonders of the area. Cliffs with caves and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks are just off the shore. The long and stark black sand beach reachs to the 120 m (400 ft) high Dyraholaey promontory, the southernmost tip of Iceland. The cliffs in the area are home to a rich variety of birdlife, among other species you might see fulmar, guillemot, razorbill, gannet and various types of seagulls - during the summer you will also see a large puffin colony.

skogafoss waterfall south iceland

Skogafoss Waterfall is one of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls

Village of Vik

Our next destination is the small town of Vik where we will visit the local wool and gift shop. The village of Vik is the southernmost village in Iceland, surrounded by beautiful valleys, beaches, cliffs and mountains. It has about 300 inhabitants and is 192 km from Reykjavík.

The beach of Reynisfjara and its basalt rocks

Waterfall Skogafoss

Continuing east we drive along the picturesque cliffs of Eyjafjoll to the Skogarfoss waterfall. Now we have to opportunity to take a hike to the top of the waterfall to view its majestic power from above. The 25 m (80 ft) wide waterfall is one of the largest in Iceland and due to the amount of spray a rainbow can often be observed during sunny days.

Waterfall Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss is one of few waterfalls that is actually possible to walk behind and view from the inside out. Falling in a majestic arch from the ancient sea cliffs it crashes down with intense power into a deep pool literally at our feet.

After a full day it is now time to return to Reykjavik, taking with us our beautiful images and memories from the south coast of Iceland, a place which you perhaps visit again one day.

Knowledgable

The guide was very friendly and knowledgable. The sights they brought us to were fantastic. I am glad I went on this tour and would do it again.

Sven was awesome

The tour guide Sven was absolutely hilarious and fun and full of information. He definitely made the tour more fun than it would have been otherwise. I'm sure it woul have been great either way, but he made it better.

So Fun We Forgot the Rain!

What a wonderful tour. Our driver was kind enough to customize a few things based on the group's interest and he made sure everyone had a great time. The tour timings were well planned and have plenty of time to explore without dragging on too long

South Shore Adventure with Jonas

5 by Amanda September 12, 2018
My best friend and I booked this tour and it was the true highlight of our trip. The scenery on this tour is breathtaking, some of it doesn't even seem as though it could be real. Jonas, the tour guide, was absolutely fantastic. He was extremely knowledgeable about both the geology of Iceland and the myths and folklore and made both equally fascinating to listen to!

Excellent tour company!

We booked 2 tours with Extreme Iceland and we were extremely satisfied with the tours as well as the communication regarding pick up etc. I highly recommend them!

Fantastic experience

My wife and I chose this tour to finish off our honeymoon in Iceland and we couldn't have picked a better tour. Everything about it was perfect, the guide Bjorky(?) was very knowledgeable and a thoroughly nice bloke. The scenery is like nothing I have seen before. We will heartily recommend the tour to everyone who is going to Iceland

Svava is the best tour guide ever

5.0 by Verified customer August 27, 2017
The astonishing beauty of the South Coast makes it worthwhile, but an amazing tour guide like Svava just makes it so much better. She has such a passion for her native country, and she told us so many wonderful stories about life in Iceland. It was riveting to listen to her. I wish I could request Svava if I took another tour with this company. Here is what I did not like: I received multiple emails prior to the trip, changing the start times. I understand this was beyond the control of the company, but what was inexcusable was that my final email and gave me the wrong start time. The nature of the correspondence made me nervous, so when I was in Iceland I actually called to confirm the time, and Linus in the office was wonderful. He double checked and give me the proper time, which was not the time I have been given via email. Had I not called, I would have missed the whole tour.

Adam (our guide for the glacier) and Nick (our driver) were excellent

5 by Bob August 26, 2018
"Adam is a very happy and caring person. He was very knowledgeable and helpful. Adam truly wanted everyone on the tour to have a great experience and as best we could tell, everyone did. Nick was also very good at what he did and he was very good at making sure everyone enjoyed the tour. Your tour company selected great people to lead the tour and our experiences were better than we expected. Thank you!

Martine was a great host for his adopted country!

5 by California girl August 24, 2018
Although it seemed to rain every time we got out of the bus, it did not dampen our spirits. Martine was very welcoming and explained where we were going and what we were doing, when to be back. We saw such beautiful sights. What's not to like?

All excellent

Holly was a fantastic tour guide

5.0 by Verified customer July 6, 2017
Not sure that I picked the right tour above, but my guide, Holly, did a fantastic job on Thursday, June 22. She kept us entertained on the long bus ride and pointed out great things for us to see. Getting to see Gljúfrabúi briefly after Seljalandsfoss was an unexpected and wonderful addition to the trip. One thing that might be helpful is to repeat questions asked by people at the front of the bus before answering them - I was sitting only a row or two back and I sometimes had trouble figuring out context for the questions; people in the back of the bus were likely struggling a bit more. This was a fantastic tour and Holly was a fantastic guide. Thanks for a wonderful day!

Great experience.

Amazing tour guide!

We had the best tour guide! I called him Doc Brown! He was so knowledgeable and informative about Iceland. He was kind and thoughtful of everyone's needs and wants on the trip. It was one of the best tours I have ever had!

Outstanding Day Tour!

5.0 by Verified customer July 18, 2017
Our tour guide, Ragnar, was excellent! He provided a safe, smooth minibus ride. He provided interesting cultural knowledge, and amusing tidbits along our route. Ragnar was funny and very personable. We liked that the bus was relatively small, thus our group was pretty nimble and able to stick to the timeline well. We also had excellent weather, which of course added to our overall level of enjoyment. We would highly recommend the South Coast minibus tour to friends and family!

Beautiful

Our tour guide, Stephen was so informative and lovely! We had a great time and loved the Black Sand Beaches (where it rained but it looked very dramatic in our opinion), Glacier, Vik and beautiful waterfalls. Would definitely recommend!!

Great tour!! My only concern is that the guide had the volume on the radio turned up too loud. Would have preferred quiet or a lower volume when playing the radio.

Pretty good tour

4 by Matthew Rooyakkers June 7, 2018
The guide was knowledgable and the tour was full of beautiful sights. The only thing I think they should've changed was that lunch should've been included in the price especially considering how much we paid for the tour and since it was a group tour.

Breathtaking

5 by Brittany June 5, 2018
From the beautiful landscape to the friendly tour guide himself, it was a remarkable experience. The tour guide provided background and stories for everything we were seeing on our way out and back in. We were thousands of miles from home, surrounded by breathtaking and unfamiliar scenery and yet felt as if were being given the tour by an old friend.

Well done

I was very happy with the tour. Our guide was excellent. We had a few issues with people being late, she was very professional and had a great sense of humor. I enjoyed the small size of the tour the van was comfortable. I hope to travel with you again sometime.

South Shore Full Day Tour with Oliver

5 by Josh Berengut May 29, 2018
Our group of ten had a wonderful experience on the full-day South Shore tour. From pre-tour communication to our on-time pickup, everything went extremely smoothly. The tour itself was really great and made even better by our wonderful tour guide, Oliver. He was extremely knowledgeable and flexible with our stops to ensure we got the most out of each stop. The black sand beach with it's crashing waves and the Seljalandsfoss falls were the highlights for us. Oliver was sure to stop along the way to provide extra scenic views whenever he thought it was picture worthy.

Incredible tour

The south shore excursion was a beautiful trip. The guide was very good and told us the best sights you could go. We didn't go to Vik town but instead we could apreciate the cliffs.

Wonderful experience

5 by Tara from Ottawa, Canada March 26, 2019
I took the Extreme Iceland South Coast tour with a couple of girlfriends, and we all had an amazing time. The tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable and had lots of interesting stories to share, especially about the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in 2010. Don't know how she managed it, but we ended up having clouds or sunshine at every stop, and all the rain stayed in between! Plus rainbows! Maybe not something you can count on every time, but it made for a magical experience :)

Amazing

Great tours!

Our tour guide was fantastic

5 by Holly Davies March 22, 2019
This was my favourite trip in Iceland. The tour guide was incredibly informative, friendly and helpful. There were lots of nuggets of icelandic information and trivia thrown in! The scenery was epic and I thought the time in each place was about right. Everything worked like clockwork - can't fault it - perfect!

All good

Amazing Southern Iceland Tour!

5 by Zarah November 29, 2018
Our tour guide Emily was amazing, and had the most fun little tidbits and details about all the places we visited. We we're VERY lucky with the weather that we had the day we took the tour. We were able to see the ice/snow caps on all the volcanoes and get a stunning view of Eyjafjallajökull. Emily made it possible for us to make some stops during the tour in order to marvel at some of the magnificent views and even to let us have a bit of shopping time at the Icewear flagship store in Vic. I will always remember the views from this experience and I will definitely be back to explore more of Iceland soon!

Glacier Hike

"A fantastic experience to be able to hike on a glacier on an active volcano. Simon was a superb guide, very friendly, knowledgeable and particularly supportive to my wife as she was very nervous coming down the ice. Another one of the bucket list."

I Love Iceland!

5 by Deborah October 28, 2018
My husband and I enjoyed our tour immensely! Beautiful, beautiful landscape! Our guide was very informative and did an excellent job. I would highly recommend Extreme Iceland. I really liked the fact it was a small group. Keep up the great work!

Really fun

"The Southcoast Tour was really nice and we were lucky with the weather, but what made a true difference to other tours it did so far was our guide Pascal. While we were most likely the two-hundredth tour she did that year, she didn't make us feel like another random tourist group. By the stories she shared about the country, nature and people as well as some personal, it was overall a really fun and meaningful experience. Many thanks"

Great experience! Fantástic guida!

Tour was AMAZING but I could have booked direct with the tour company

5 by I love Iceland October 25, 2018
Booking with Extreme Iceland was fine but I did not realize that it is a third party booking service. Thus, when I was picked up, it was by Artic Adventures, NOT Extreme Iceland. I say cut out the middle man and just book directly with other tour companies. That's the only reason I give this a low rating. Extreme Iceland didn't actually provide a service.

Great

Great tour into the South of Iceland

5 by Gabriela October 2, 2018
The day that we took the tour was really sunny so we had an amazing day seeing the different landscapes and beaches of the South of Iceland. Our guide told us about the history of this amazing country which help us to understand and appreciate more what we were seeing. The overall experience was really amazing.

5 by Gaynor watson January 31, 2019
excellent trip only in Iceland for two days, this south shore full day trip showed us so many highlights to Iceland thanks to our drive/tour guide Maggi, who was very informative, and went out of his way for us all to have a fab day taking us to Skogg foss falls, glacier, black sands and many more places pointing out along the way other places one being the most southerly point church. Looking forward to returning to Iceland .

An enjoyable tour, well organised and well led. Our only concern was that we were unable to see out of the windows at the back of the bus due to mud coming off the road. The driver was unable to help as he did not have a window cleaner.

South Shore Minibus Tour

5 by Kim Oultram January 19, 2019
We really enjoyed our tour to see the waterfalls, beach and Vic. We found that being in a small group of 16 and on the minibus was easy and saved time waiting for everyone to load and unload at each stop. Vince ( not sure that was quite his name, apologies )was very interesting as he told us about Icelandic present day, history and stories. Thoroughly enjoyed the day.

AMAZING!
