There are many, many different attractions in Iceland, there’s so much to see and do! The most popular tour is the famous Golden Circle, a driving route of iconic natural Icelandic elements; waterfalls, geysers, and parks, and then there’s the most popular attraction; Blue Lagoon. Why wouldn’t you want to combine these on to the same day!
Departing from multiple pickup points in Reykjavik, this small group, minibus tour will spend one action-packed afternoon traveling through southern Iceland, to Gullfoss waterfall, Stokkur geyser and between the tectonic plates at Thingvellir National Park, before dropping you off at the world-renowned Blue Lagoon!
We will pick you up from your hotel and travel out of the city, we don’t have to journey too far before we reach the magnificent natural sceneries of a UNESCO heritage site, Thingvellir National Park. Famed for it’s history and it’s geography! The park incorporates the rift valley of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, which are gradually splitting apart at a rate of 2cm or 1 inch every year. You will have the opportunity to walk between rocky cliffs of the tectonic plate boundaries, passing by a waterfall and viewing platform, where you can see across to the Icelandic flag marking the site of the old parliament. In 930, the worlds first parliament; Alþingi was founded on this site, making it the first parliament and also the oldest continuously existing parliament, in the world.
The middle stop on the Golden Circle will be in the geothermally active, Geysir area. The famous and original Great Geysir, is now relatively dormant, with the main attraction being passed down to Stokkur, a smaller but equally impressive geysir! Over 1000 years old, this sprouting hot spring is a lot more lively and projects water into the air up to 30 meters! It’s also very frequent - erupting at regular 5-15 minute intervals with temperatures over 80 degrees celsius.
To finish the circle, the last stop of the three is the magnificent Gullfoss Waterfall. On bright days, rainbows appear over the waterfall in the mist and give the waterfall the nickname ‘Golden Falls’ because of the natural golden hue created. In winter the white, frosty surroundings and icicles only add to the overall impressiveness. Water roars and plunges down the drop in two grades, first at a descent of 11 meters (36 feet) and then almost doubles at 21 meters (70 feet) into a pool 32 meters (105 feet) deep. You can walk a short length of the waterfall, to see it from different angles, and there is a viewing platform near one of the drops. Take care as the mist from the fall can make paths slippery and can also freeze over!
The Golden Circle component will finish at around 5pm and you will then get dropped at the bus station where you can catch a transfer to the lagoon, from BSI bus station in Reykjavik. A coach will take you to the Blue Lagoon for 19.00/ 7 PM entry time. You will need to buy your own tickets for 7 pm entry, as the admission fee to the Blue Lagoon is NOT included in the price.
The lagoon is one the most popular activities in Iceland and frequently sells out, so be sure to book far in advance at bluelagoon.com before taking part in this tour package.
