Tour Description

Your glacier hiking and ice cave adventure will start at the Glacier Guides booking office in Skaftafell, (located at the parking lot in Skaftafell National Park).

We start our journey with a 20-min drive over rugged terrain followed by a short walk through the valley towards the glacier. Before stepping onto the surface of the ice, our certified glacier guide will give you a safety talk and an introduction to all the equipment that we will be using. We will provide you with all the equipment that you need.

Your safety is, of course, paramount and our experts will ensure that you are always safe on the ice. After the safety briefing, your magical glacier experience will begin! We strap on our crampons and head for an exciting glacier hike to a natural ice cave.

Explore One of the Most Beautiful Outlet Glaciers in Iceland

The hike takes place on Falljokull, an outlet glacier of the mighty Vatnajokull Glacier which is Europe's largest ice cap. As we make our way to the ice cave, we will traverse the ever-evolving glacial landscapes, taking in the deep crevices and the incredible ice formations. Falljokull is known as one of the most beautiful outlet glaciers in Iceland. Its surface is wildly rugged and decorated with millions of sharp ice sculptures. Walking on this terrain is an absolutely surreal experience!

The ice cave we visit is selected based on actual conditions each time. We will spend about 1.5-2 hours on the ice, including the glacier hike and the ice cave exploration. This tour is suitable for individuals who are able to comfortably walk for 2 hours outdoors across easy but rough terrain. There is no special skill or experience needed for this tour.

Visit a Natural Ice Cave Inside the Glacier

Ice caves are particularly special: they are formed when the temperature drops each winter and then disappear when it gets warm again in the spring. Each year, new caves are formed at new locations and each time we select the best one that we visit on this tour. Even during the wintertime, the ice cave is constantly changing as the weather conditions change, making each visit a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Being inside the glacier is an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life! Thanks to the special characteristics of glacial ice, these ice caves are incredibly blue and transparent. Words can’t describe just how amazing it is to see one in the real-life and being inside it.

We will spend some time in the ice cave exploring all the magic it has to offer: giving you ample opportunity to snap a few photos of this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon.  Then, we will hike back over the remarkable glacier: the perfect end to the perfect day.

This tour really is a once in a lifetime experience and the perfect choice for winter visitors to Iceland: so book today, you most definitely won’t regret it.

Thank you!

"We truly enjoyed our glacier hike, and our tour guides did a wonderful job teaching us about the glacier and keeping us safe (thank you, Biscuit and Alaina). The glacier itself is so beautiful, and my husband said the glacier trip was his favorite part of our trip to Iceland (and we loved every second of exploring Iceland). I was also impressed with our bus driver Carolyn. She even stopped the bus to pick up trash in the park, and I appreciated her care for the environment and her pride in the park. Thanks for a wonderful trip!

Amazing guide

5 by Renee April 15, 2019
"The guide for our ice cave tour was amazing - knowledgable, kind and with a great sense of humour. The ice caves and scenery on the glacier were beautiful. It seems like Extreme Iceland outsource to another company... At the meeting point by the cafe there were only signs for the company but not ""Extreme Iceland"". It would have been helpful if there were signs for ""Extreme Iceland"", or a note in the instructions emailed to us as to the name of the company we should search for."

Great tour, amazing ice cave

5 by Heidi Peasley April 13, 2019
A fun time getting to the cave in near white out conditions, blast chiller weather made for an unforgettable short trek to the cave but once at the cave it was stunningly beautiful and quite sheltered, really stunning ice formations and unforgettable. A really great experience with a humorous guide !

The guide was very informative and helpful with the group. Its an unique experience. We had a lot of fun and a great time. Thank you for having this tour available.

perfect afternoon

5 by Andrea Berecz April 1, 2019
Our guide, Przemek was really good, we had a very good experience on the glacier, the ice cave was stunning, it's like a glass ornament, we were lucky to have beautiful lights inside.

One of the coolest things I've ever done

5 by Shandi April 1, 2019
I had no idea the tour would be so involved and we would get to see so much of the glacier, not just the ice cave. It was so incredibly beautiful and I'm so glad I signed up for this tour. Plus, the people were really fantastic. All around a great experience!

Highlight of our Icelandic Odyssey

5 by Jonty March 29, 2019
Can’t speak highly enough of the organisation, and in particular our guide Jen who was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the glacier... her passion for the ice was infectious and she really made the trip a memorable one.

Awesome experience with top notch guide

5 by Nick from NZ March 28, 2019
A group of 5 of us headed up onto the glacier with a lovely guide from Scotland (Orla). She was very knowledgeable, kind, and gave us some great tips for the rest of our trip. Would recommend to all who love to see how beautiful our world is.

Awesome tour

5 by Brian Jeffay March 26, 2019
"Even though I was probably 20 years older than all in the group it was an amazing experience . Kish was a huge part of making it so enjoyable . Safety was always the number 1 priority. Kish scouted out areas of interest on the glacier and then led the group to excellent locations for viewing . Amazing photo opportunities will await you . I very highly recommend this tour and the cost is nothing compared to the exercise and enjoyment ."

Stunning scenery

5 by Jas March 24, 2019
A great walking tour of a glacier and ice cave. We really got a feel for the enormity of the glacier and also for its ephemeral/ever-changing nature.

Awesome tour Into The Glacier

5 by Jovy Tsang March 15, 2019
We had a great experience with Extreme Iceland on 8 Mar 2019. The Glacier and Icecave was breathtaking scenery. Our guide Erik was friendly, fantastic and professional. He was a helpful photographer too. We will recommend this great tour to my friends.

very nice tour!

5 by Tibor March 10, 2019
We did the glacier caves hike - it was an amazing tour - both, the glacier cave itself and short walk on the glacier were very nice and the guide - young scottish lady :) did a very good job, telling us a lot of interesting facts! worth the money for sure! thank you.

Beautiful Landscapes

5 by Kevin S March 9, 2019
We had a blast exploring the glacier and an ice cave. Erik was an excellent tour guide that took us all over different parts of the glacier, teaching us about it along the way. He also gave us lots of insight into how the glacier has been changing over the last few decades, unfortunately shrinking at an accelerating rate. You could tell he was passionate about educating people about the glacier and how our actions impact such a delicate environment. I feel very lucky to have had this experience and I can only hope that these beautiful things last much longer than anticipated. So awe-inspiring! Thank you for the experience.

An amazing adventure

This is the greatest experience I've ever had. This trip expanded my life vision. It's really fantastic.

Into the glacier

5 by Donna G February 28, 2019
"The glacier trip was the highlight of our trip to Iceland. I enjoyed seeing the beautiful blue ice and the natural wonder of the glacier. The cave was interesting but not what I expected. Our guide Mca was excellent! There were some people on the tour that were a little disrespectful and he really addressed it. He was a great guide and head everyone’s best interest in mind. Thanks I would suggest not handing out the pick axes as they only encourage irresponsible people to hack into the beautiful glacier which spoils it for the next group. Plus so many people were swinging them while they walked it seemed pointless to have them And more of a hindrance than any help"

Would recommend this tour to everyone

5 by Sannah February 27, 2019
It is so cool to go up on a glacier with all the gear you get. We had a lovely tour guide that understood that we all wanted to make the perfect pictures so we stopped several times. I would highly recommend doing this tour!

Absolutely Amazing!

5 by Mrs Kimberly Cook February 24, 2019
"It's difficult to sum up the experience that we had... It was everything I expected and more. Our tour guide was full of knowledge about the whole island as well as other places around the world. He was professional but had us smiling all day. The glacier and the cave was awe inspiring. Equipment was checked throughly. Make sure your boots have ankle support but they have ones to loan if yours aren't suitable, believe me you need the support. Not only would I recommend it to a friend we fully intend to return in the future and do this again before the glacier has completely melted away! Thank you for everything!"

5 by Pauline February 12, 2019
"We took the 4 hour tour on the glacier and into the ice cave. We got excellent equipment and clear explanations on how to use them. All staff members have been very friendly and helpful. The tour was really nice (for us it has been really interesting to walk on a glacier at sea level instead of at 3000m!) and our guide was really helpful. We felt we were in good hands. Thanks a lot for this wonderful experience! P.S. At some moments it was quite busy at the glacier, but I guess it cannot be coordinated to avoid this."

Guide was very knowledgeable. Neat hike up into the glacier.

Great tour with an awesome guide!

4 by Mihoko Peyret-Lacombe February 7, 2019
"This glacier hiking was one of the best activities I did in Iceland! The guide was super knowledgeable about the glacier and explained us its history, it’s formation, etc. in details. He was open to accept any question we had, and he answered them with sincerity. I recommend this hike with this company to any one who wants to see the absolute beauty of the glacier and have an adventure you will never forget in your life. The only thing that prevented from rating 10 on my overall experience was the darkeness inside the ice cave when we arrived there. I am the one who picked the afternoon tour, so it was not at all the fault of either the guide or this company. They tried their best to avoid congestion at the cave and show us the best of what they had with the time we had. Thank you so much for the great experience!!!"

Fun experience

5 by Cesar Gonzalez February 5, 2019
The tour was really nice and our guide Procop gave quite some interesting explanations about the caves and the glacier. Worth it

Highly recommended

5 by Anon February 5, 2019
This was so much better than I expected and made so much better by our super knowledgeable and friendly tour guide! He made safety and wellbeing a key concern at all times so we felt we were in safe hands. All the equipment we needed was provided too. Highly recommend.

Great tour

4 by Michelle February 2, 2019
"We had a great tour, Into The Glacier. We were with a small group of 8 people and 2 guides. They were very knowledge about the glaciers. We were alone in the ice cave so we had a lot of time and space, that was great. The tour was much longer then it used to be, we tought that was awesome. We were about 3 hours on the glacier."

Do this tour!

5 by Becky Adkins February 1, 2019
"When I saw the prices I thought it was a little expensive but it was worth every penny! I don’t like big tour bus tours and this was the perfect size with only 10 people! Our guide was delightful, knowledgeable and a lot of fun! The glacier is the most amazing place I have been too and I enjoyed walking through the blue ice crevasses even more than the ice caves! The equipment was all very good and the process was a well oiled machine! An awesome tour in an spectacular place!"

Our guide, Tony (from Tasmania) was truly exceptional. He was very knowledgeable, friendly and at all times alert and focused on safety. We really enjoyed our trip and he was a key factor in making it the amazing experience it was.

do it

5 by Nancy December 24, 2018
"This is a great tour. Not too hard for us older people and yet not so easy the young people were bored. Our guide (I forget her name but she was from Scotland) gave great instructions and information and was easy to talk to as we walked on the glacier! We were a family of 5 ranging in ages from 20 to 54 years old. I would say to definitely put this on your ""to do"" list when you visit Iceland. The only annoying part of the tour is the walk back from the glacier as we were in a hurry trying to see more of the sights before it was dark."

You HAVE to do this!

5 by Katie and Nick December 10, 2018
Why travel all the way to Iceland and not take advantage of one of the things that you probably won’t do anywhere else? Just go on the tour! This company was amazing. They took the time to teach you how to put on crampons, and how to walk safely and effectively on the ice. The glacial hike was great, the cave was awesome, but I think my favorite park was the crevice. The bright blue ice is incredible. Our guide was so knowledgeable and personable, and taught us a lot of the geologic history. If you’re hesitating about the price, put it into perspective. First, you flew all the way here; get your moneys worth. But for about $150 per person, for a ~5 hour tour, this is $25 per hour which is extremely reasonable. This was definitely the best part of the trip, so just book it already!

Wonderful Tour and Guide!

5 by Shannon November 27, 2018
We booked our tour in August and apparently it was rescheduled in October, but I missed the communication. The team was very accommodating and arranged for us to have a private tour. It would have been nice to have a reminder/ confirmation email the week prior to our trip. The tour itself was amazing. Would not have ventured into the glacier without a knowledgeable guide, as it is quite dangerous.

What an amazing trip onto the glacier. Our guide, Jen, was brilliant, and answered all of our questions with clarity and spirit. It's incredible to be up on the glacier looking across at the ice fall and down to the sea. Overwhelming beauty from all sides.

Tour guide B was amazing

5 by Aditi Madabhushi April 5, 2018
"She was extremely bright and knowledgeable about the glacier. Taught us a lot. Was really safe. And most importantly was really fun and social. I had a wonderful time and would love to do it again! Thanks B. Enjoy your time in Iceland. Aditi"

Thanks to Extreme Iceland crew and especially our tour guide Prokop for making our tour such a pleasant and interesting part of our Iceland trip. Prokop took good care of the whole gang and made sure everyone was safe and amused the whole time. Thanks bud!

Put this on your bucket list!

5 by Scott Sexton March 30, 2018
When I signed up for this, I was a little concerned about the cost. Now that I've been on the Into the Cave tour with Arctic Adventures, I'm EXTREMELY happy with our decision. The guide was not only informative, but also extremely friendly and added some silly jokes into his patter, making the day a wonderful light hearted adventure for all of us. Thanks for the amazing learning experience, it is a memory that will live with me for a long time!

Beautiful Glacier Walk with experienced guide

5 by Frank Wright March 30, 2018
My wife and I did this tour on our trip to Iceland. While the Crystal Cave was not available at that date (flooded due to glacial melt), the glacier walk and ice cave was fantastic. We then were moved to another tour of an ice cave near the Katla volcano which was also very enjoyable. The guides at both were great and we learned a lot from then and had a nice time chatting them up. I definitely recommend it to those who may want to do something a little more adventurous than just driving in a car around the country.

Good experience

3 by Morten Mikkelsen March 28, 2018
"Our normally Crystal Ice Cave tour were cancelled during high temperatures and water in the cave. This message we got the evening before scheduled. Of course not the best when we have looked forward to the Crystal Cave tour, but on the other hand - safety first. We have an alternative tour - The Glacier Tour - where we walk the glacier and saw an ""Ice Cave"" - which was blue and beautiful. We spend a lot of time on the glacier - in my opinion way too long doing nothing, but waiting for the other team and waiting for the bus to pick us up. The guide was vey helpful with answers our questions and everything, but it seems the she didn't know what to do with us after we in the beginning have seen the highlight - the ""Ice Cave"". For us it could have been 1 hour shorter, because it in the end took longer than scheduled and we have others places to see that day. But overall a good experience we wouldn't have missed, but much too long time doing ""nothing"" but waiting."

Great day

Caroline was an awesome tour guide!

5 by Maria March 23, 2018
Very knowledgeable, great sense of humor, and made sure everyone enjoyed the trip. Even the check in staff was great! Super friendly and answered everyone's questions with a smile.

Amazing experience!

5 by Shaina March 22, 2018
We had Thomas as a guide and he was absolutely fantastic. He was informative, friendly, and easy going. It was a very rainy wet day and we still had a great time and we're pleased we chose this excursion!

Friendly, efficient, competent.

5 by Brandon March 17, 2018
Had a great experience with Extreme Iceland. Guide was knowledgeable, particularly in geology as that was an area of special study for him, friendly, engaging. Trip out and back was well-organized given the number of tours run out of Skaftafell visitor center and the appearance of chaos at the start. We were broken into smaller, more manageable groups quickly once on-site. Easy to book, good value. I had intended to go with another guide service but was defeated at every turn with unreturned emails, lack of internal communications, etc. Extreme Iceland was much easier.

Very Friendly Company

5 by Rebecca March 15, 2018
My step-daughter and I enjoyed a glacial walk with this company. They are very friendly and the walk was good for all levels. They know what they’re doing and we felt very safe with them. They brought us to a beautiful spot and we got a great feel for crampons and walking on ice. Thanks for a great time!

Awesome Time!

5 by Tessa March 15, 2018
Great tour! I went with a friend and we had an amazing tour guide. We learned all about the area and detailed information about the glaciers and volcanos of Iceland. Super fun and I would recommend it to everyone

Amazing time in the ice cave!

5 by Charles March 15, 2018
I had a fantastic time on the tour. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable and did his best to make sure everyone had a good time. The tour moved at a good pace for a large group and everyone had ample opportunity to see everything, take plenty of pictures and have fun!

Must do tour!

5 by Samantha Martin March 14, 2018
The ice cave and views we saw on this tour topped anything else seen in Iceland! Scenic views paired with a friendly, knowledgeable tour guide, this tour quickly became a must do trip for anybody else I know that will be visiting Iceland!

Incredible experience with knowledgeable yet overly safety conscious guide

4 by James March 14, 2018
"All in all my Dad, brother and I had a really enjoyable experience on the tour, didn't know exactly what to expect but it was a lot of fun with some incredible sights. I personally thought the ice cave area would be a bit bigger but i think my view was influenced by too much google searching in advance. The guide was really nice (British, woop!) and clearly knew her stuff about the area so was interesting to chat to along the way. The only thing that we all agreed on was the level of concern of what seemed liked the smallest safety issues was a bit much. Now, we fully understand that not everyone on the trip was as 'outdoorsy' as us and you have to cover your backsides (plus i'm sure there are accidents occasionally) etc but the dramatic clearing of the 'bridge' to cross a shallow stream i could of stepped across was a bit weird to start with. She clearly the smallest stones off the path up as though they were mines and the decent down the final path after we'd come off the glacier was very unnecessarily slow and careful. She did her best to ham up the 'danger' which probably works with a certain demographic of client but to even reasonably experienced, semi-fit, outdoors minded people it was a bit embarrassing i our opinion. Tone it down a few notches and i think it'd be better. ...saying that my dad half fell through a frozen lake we were walking on the day after so we're clearly idiots. (he was fine fyi)."

Wonderful Inside The Glacier - Ice Caving Tour

4 by Eric March 10, 2018
"Initially, we had booked the Ice Queen tour via Extreme Iceland but due to the weather conditions we were rescheduled to this tour, which included a hike over the glacier. This hike allowed us to get some stunning views of the glacier with its nice blue-coloured ice. We believe that the hike itself really added a lot to the experience. Furthermore, Extreme Iceland was the only operator at the specific glacier that we went to so there were hardly any other tourists. They also recommend this tour by themselves although this is not clear from the website (the Ice Queen tour sounds more attractive). The hike is very well doable for a normal person; you don't have to be fit to do the hike. We had different expectations from the ice cave in terms of its dimensions. From the pictures on the website, it looks like there exists a cave network but in reality it turned out that the cave is only about 30 meters deep. That's why only 10-20 minutes is spent in the caves. Nevertheless, the blue colour and transparent ice made it a worthwhile experience. At last, we would like to mention that we thought the tour was a bit on the long side. It felt that our tour guide didn't know what to do with us the rest of the time (before the truck picked us up again). Furthermore, we really had to put effort extracting information about the glaciers. The tour guide was not that enthusiastic but that might be also related to the seemingly uninterested group where we were in. Finally, I think Extreme Iceland can have some more responsibility towards climate changes and how this affects the glacier. Our tour guide told that we didn't want to connect the shrinking of the glacier to climate change, whereas this is the moment to make tourists aware of their treatment of the earth."

Great Experience at the ''Into the Glacier'' Tour

5 by Tyler Piotrowski March 6, 2018
My wife and I had an excellent experience at the "Into the Glacier" tour while in Iceland. Our tour leader Marcus was great and informative on all levels. The glacier and ice cave itself was awesome and very beautiful to see. We also got to ride in a sweet Mercedes van. Great overall experience.

Our guide Bryony was fantastic. She was really friendly and knowledgeable and we felt in safe hands. There were bad storms whilst we were there and it seemed like they put safety first and adjusted plans with as minimal impact to customers as possible. The tour was fab, great scenery and just a small group. The guide was in communication with other groups on the glacier to avoid overlapping at any spots which was an added bonus. Would highly recommend this trip to anyone visiting Iceland.

Glacier hike and ice cave

5 by Lindsey B. February 26, 2018
This tour was incredible! What a magical experience to hike on top of a glacier and then explore a beautiful blue ice cave. Our tour guide Ollie was fun and informative. I felt very safe and comfortable on our adventure. He showed us the best sites and helped us take amazing photos. The group was small and friendly. We booked this tour last minute because our original ice cave tour was cancelled due to heavy rain and flooding. Extreme Iceland was very accommodating and also helped other people who had cancelled tours have a great experience. The groups were staggered and it never felt crowded. I would definitely recommend this tour and company.
