Fossavatnsgangan in held in the West Fjords around Ísafjörður area, it is the oldest ski race in Iceland history. The first race was in 1935, only 20 km long, many years later or in 1987 they added 10 km to the challenge. Furthermore, a 5 km race was organized so children and beginners could participate. Today the race is both for professionals and amateurs, skiing athletes come from all around the world to participate in the race.
Nowadays you can choose between 4 courses, 5 km, 12.5 km, 25 km, and 50 km. The main attraction is the 50 km race, which has taken place since 2005. All skiers must travel at minimum speed or they will be taken of the race and they have to pass at least 35 km mark within 5 hours.
