There are many kinds of boat tours, but for those who enjoy silence and authenticity, we highly recommend you choose a sailboat. Opal is an elegant, seaworthy boat. This two-masted schooner was built in Damgarten, Germany in 1951 and has sailed all over the world, completing several transatlantic crossings.
This beautiful boat is 24 meters (78.7 feet) long, 7 meters (22.9 feet) wide, and is made of oak. It is mostly powered by wind but also has a carbon-free, hybrid electric engine which allows us to get closer to wildlife and to enjoy the ultimate silence of the ocean.
Opal is the first carbon-free engine-powered sailing vessel in Iceland. Thanks to its unique hybrid technology, Opal won the World Responsible Tourism Award at the World Travel Market in London as well as the Environmental Award from the Icelandic Tourist Board.
Opal has a spacious deck with an amazing wood-fired hot tub where you can warm yourself up enough to not care about the chilly Arctic breeze. For those who want to stay dry, we provide super warm overalls and cozy blankets to keep you warm.
We sail out of Reykjavík in the evening and visit some of the small, uninhabited islands in the bay that surrounds the capital. We sail close to some tiny, adorable lighthouses as well as the famous Imagine Peace Tower, Yoko Ono’s extraordinary art piece which is located on one of those small islands. We will tell you about the history as well as some mystical folktales from these lighthouses and islands. As we sail around the bay, we will have a fantastic view of the illuminated Reykjavík.
From September to April, this sailing tour offers the best opportunity to witness the Northern Lights dancing above. Sailing out of the light-polluted area makes the conditions for seeing the lights even better even if they are faint and cannot be seen from the city.
The Northern Lights are, of course, a natural phenomenon whose occurrence is out of our control, so we cannot guarantee any sightings. We can, however, assure you that you will enjoy this trip even if you do not see them!
