Hiking and ice climbing on the mighty Sólheimajökull Glacier is an experience that combines stunning natural scenery, with adrenaline-pumping fun. There are a host of incredible sights on show in this crevice-dotted wilderness, which your friendly guide will tell you all about. Then, around halfway through the tour, we will pause and try out the pulsating sport of ice-climbing (we provide all the necessary equipment), before we explore the ever-evolving glacier some more. It is ideal for anyone who wants a unique experience in a frozen wonderland.

Snorkeling in Silfra

Silfra is a magical, alien world, which is completely bathed in blue. It is located in the gap between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, meaning that you will be swimming in the gap between two continents. This combined with the incredible underwater visibility that the site provides, thanks to its icy-blue glacial water, makes it one of the finest diving sites in the entire world.

Lava Caving

Crafted by volcanic activity many millennia ago, lava tube caves are one of the world’s most fascinating underground phenomena. They are formed by the flash-cooling of molten rock, when an area becomes less volcanically active and are normally home to fascinating rock formations, vivid colors and much, much more. This tour will take you to one of these underground delights, alongside a friendly guide who will tell you all about the wonders contained within them.

Once we reach the valley, we will bathe in the hot spring river that bisects it, a wonderful experience, surrounded by rolling hills and wispy plumes of smoke, rising into the air.

The Icelandic horse

Icelandic horses are totally unique, thanks to the isolation of the species, meaning that you will be riding the same horse as the Vikings did. They are famous for their unique gait, known as the tolt, which means that they always have one hoof on the ground. Icelandic horses are the ideal way to explore the rugged Icelandic wilderness, experiencing the incredible natural scenery, in a fun and enjoyable way: riding in Iceland is an experience that you won’t want to miss!

Itinerary

Day 1 - Golden Circle and Rafting

Day one begins bright and early, at 8:00 am with collection from your Reykjavik accommodation. (Please note that pick up can last up to thirty minutes depending on your location). From there, we will travel to the famous Golden Circle, which is home to a host of incredible wonders, which are the defining features of the land of fire and ice.

The tour begins at the majestic Gullfoss Waterfall (Golden Falls), where water cascades across a number of lava steps, down to the luscious green canyon below. On a summer’s day a combination of the light and the rocks beneath the water, causes it to have a golden hue, which gives the falls their name, while glorious rainbows are also commonplace. It is the perfect place to gain a new perspective on the awe-inspiring beauty of nature, a profoundly beautiful place, which will remain with you for the rest of your life.

From there we will travel to the Geysir geothermal area, which hosts Strokkur, a violent geyser, which propels bubbling, jets of molten hot water into the air. You will also see the now dormant, Great Geysir, which gives all geysers their name and was the first geyser to be named in Western literature.

Then we will move on to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that hosts Althingi, site of Iceland’s first parliament in 930 AD, which makes it the world’s oldest still operational national parliament. It is also steeped in geological significance, housing the gap between the North American and European continents, along with a host of stunning natural features, including turquoise lagoons, spectacular rock formations and a whole lot more.

The final stop of the tour is Drumboddstaðir, our river rafting base on the Hvita River (White River). Hvita offers a combination of adrenaline-pumping, hair-raising, whitewater rapids, alongside quieter areas that offer a tranquil place, with exceptional natural beauty. Gliding down the waters of Hvita is a sublime experience: an adventure, which is set to a majestic natural backdrop. When we reach Brúarhlöð, you will have the opportunity to cast yourself from the side of the cliff into the frothing waters below, an adrenaline pumping experience, that any adventurous person is sure to enjoy. We provide all the equipment that you need for the trip, including a wetsuit, a helmet, a life vest and a paddle, as well as an experienced guide that will be with you the whole time. When we return back to our base camp, we warm up in the sauna (optional) and take a quick shower before heading back to Reykjavik after an exhilarating and adventurous day, filled with Viking history, geological wonders and gorgeous scenery, we will return to Reykjavik, tired and sated.

Please remember to bring: Warm undergarments (fleece/wool sweater and pants), warm socks, and a change of clothing, along with a bathing suit and a towel for river rafting.

Day 2 - Glacier Hike and Ice Climbing

Day 2 begins bright and early, at 8:30 am with collection from your Reykjavik accommodation. (Please note that this process can take up to 30 minutes depending on your location). From there we will travel to the incredible Sólheimajökull glacier, an ancient, constantly evolving glacier, which extends like a tongue out of Myrdalsjokull ice cap in the South of Iceland. This tour has been one of our best seller tours for a long time as well as being a long time favorite of participants.

Once we arrive at Sólheimajökull for your glacier hike, you will instantly be struck, by its rugged and raw terrain: riddled with icy ledged, craggy rock crevices and a whole lot more, standing on it is almost otherworldly. Our professional glacier guides will take you across this alien landscape, while also giving you an insight into how glaciers have helped shape our planet. It is an experience, which engages all your senses: the pristine white snow, the freshness of the air and the creaking of the ice underfoot all serve to make it an incredible experience, which will remain with you for the rest of your life. Then on our return journey to Reykjavik, we will make a stop at Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss is known as the one you can walk behind, admiring its beauty from every angle. Skogfoss is a roaring stream of icy blue glacial water that crashes into a pool 60 meters below. There are 527 steps, which meander their way to the top of the cliff and offer spectacular vistas across the waterfall and surrounding area. It is a sensual feast that will send shivers down your spine and give you a new perspective on all the magic that our world has to offer.

Please remember to wear warm layers (not cotton), headwear, a scarf, gloves, a waterproof jacket and pants, hiking boots are essential, it is not possible to fit ice crampons onto any other footwear.

Day 3: Snorkeling and Caving

We normally visit either Leiðarendi Cave or Gjábakkahellir, depending on the season and the prevailing weather conditions. Both are typical examples of lava tube caves, meaning that you will have an exceptional time, whichever one we go to.

Lava tube caves are ancient channels, through which molten lava used to travel beneath the Earth’s surface, eventually, as the area becomes less volcanically active, the lava begins to cool and forms a long round tube, which is totally unique. These tubes of petrified lava, normally contain spectacular rock formations, along with a unique geological history, which will excite and delight in equal measure. We will traverse this fascinating natural phenomenon, alongside expert guides who will ensure your safety, provide you with all the equipment that you need, like a flashlight and a helmet, while also educating you about volcanos, lava tubes and a host of other interesting things. Then, after a quick lunch, we will travel to a world that is anathema to the dark, rocky lava tube caves: the stunning underwater world of the Silfra Fissure. Silfra is a magical place that is bathed in incredible shades of turquoise, sapphire and dark blue. The gap between the North American and European tectonic plates, it is one of the most beautiful, geologically significant and awe-inspiring places that you will ever see. This alongside the stunning clarity of its glacial waters, (which offer more than 100 meters of visibility), means that it is consistently rated as one of the finest diving sites in the entire world.

As soon as you pierce the surface, you will be struck by the stunning water clarity of the chasm, which allows you to see up to 100 meters, the furthest of any dive site in the world. It is an unforgettable diving experience, where you will traverse the no man’s land between two continents, amidst glorious blue waters, from an ancient glacier.
