First, you will stop by Thingvellir National Park, a unique location with both historical and geological significance. It’s the place where the world’s first parliament was established. And the visible part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge can be seen only in Thingvellir, it’s the borderline where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates diverge constantly at a pace of 2cm (0.8 in) annually. You will walk between the two continental plates. The next you will visit the Great Geysir and Strokkur hot springs. The term “Geyser” in Geology was, in fact, adapted from the Icelandic word “geysir,” meaning “to gush,” by some English visitors to Iceland who saw these unusual, gushing hot springs for the first time. Not far from the quiet Great Geysir, it’s the very lively Strokkur, swirling up to 10 - 20 meters (33 - 66 feet) every 6 - 10 minutes, making it one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in Iceland.

Next up you are going to see an even more sensational scene that is Gullfoss waterfall, where glacier meltwater forms a drop of 32 meters (105 feet) in two stages before falling into the gorge where both sides of the canyon can reach up to 70 meters (230 feet). It’s a gorgeous waterfall situated amidst Iceland’s dramatic landscape.

After the morning’s sensational sightseeing, you will head to the stunning South Coast. The route to South Coast offers a striking contrast as on your left side is ice-capped mountains and on your right side is the endless shimmering shoreline. The first stop will be Seljalandsfoss waterfall, a remarkable drop of 60 meters from a cliff and you can walk behind the falls to see both sides of the beauty. The next site is Skogafoss waterfall, one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland with a drop of 25 meters in width and 60 meters in height. Walking up to the top of the hill you can further appreciate the fantastic panorama. Both waterfalls are originated from the famous volcano Eyjafjallajokull, and you can even see it on a day of good visibility.

Finally, you will arrive at a nice country hotel near the picturesque seafront town, Vik. Its unobstructed open view provides the best spot to catch some Northern Lights when the condition allows.

Day 2 - Black Sand Beach, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and an Ice Cave Exploration

Waking up on the southern tip of Iceland, before you visit the breathtaking Reynisfjara black sand beach, a relishing breakfast is waiting for you. Then, Iceland’s weird beauty will once again show its magic through the basalt columns, rolling waves, and the Reynisdrangar basalt pillars - in the forms of several jagged, unyielding pyramids - standing offshore. Please pay attention to your guide’s suggestion about visiting since the forceful waves can be very dangerous.

Day Highlights

  • Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
  • Reynisdrangar Basalt Pillars
  • Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
  • The Diamond Beach
  • Natural Ice Cave

Next up you are going to the crown jewel of Iceland’s natural attractions, Jökulsárló Glacier Lagoon. The lagoon only started to form in the early 20th century. Driving from South Coast tip, you will go through the charming lava fields covered by soft moss, some incredible sights of deserts, and some extraterrestrial landforms created by volcanic eruptions ages ago on both sides of the Ring Road to Southeast Iceland.

As you arrive at the magnificent Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, a glacier tongue of Vatnajokull, you are going to step outside to see something extraordinary. Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and the nearby Diamond Beach are two memorable sights where you will witness the majestic beauty on the land of fire and ice. The lagoon is filled with blue icebergs of all sizes and shapes in different shades of blue, sometimes with brown or black stripes in them. On Diamond Beach, you will get a closer look of the icebergs as they got washed ashore. The glittering ice cubes shine mesmerizingly against the black sands. You will also be able to see rich birdlife at the lagoon, including Arctic Terns, and even seals.

Then the glacier guide will take you to the enchanting crystal ice cave hidden in Breidamerkurjokull. Ice cave is a natural phenomenon and it constantly changes, in other words, they are constantly in the making. It’s a perfect moment for you to capture as you will be surrounded by the overwhelmingly beautiful crystal blue ice. But visiting ice cave is highly weather-dependent, your professional glacier guide may decide to combine ice caving and glacier hiking as one activity depending on the conditions. Finally, you will stay at Skaftafell for the night and you might see Northern Lights if you are lucky!

Day 3 - Glacier Hike on Vatnajökull Glacier

On day three, you are going to try a new glacier experience - glacier hiking on *Svínafellsjökull glacier. You will be amazed by its magnificence as the glacier is dynamic, astonishing, and incredibly beautiful. The glacier is constantly moving, slowly but surely. In the process, it creates sinkholes, crevasses, moulins, ice ridge and other ice formations that later your glacier guide will talk about in detail. You will also see them or pass them during the hiking journey. It’s quite an unforgettable adventure. Since the glorious icescape is not an everyday scene - especially you get the chance to step in and appreciate it in a close distance - this immersive experience is a fantastic chance to learn about glacier’s amazing facts.

Day Highlights

  • Glacier Walk on Vatnajökull Glacier
  • Fjaðrargljúfur Canyon*

Included

  • Hotel breakfast

After a good work out on the glacier, you will be heading back to Reykjavik on a scenic ride with stops along the trip. During the wintertime, Iceland’s weather can be very unpleasant from time to time, making it a major factor for making certain stops. An added bonus visit to the Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon will be added to this already amazing tour when the roads leading up to it are clear and the area is open to the public. Nature there is very fragile and the area is sometimes closed off to conserve it.

You will be back to Reykjavik in the evening between 8-10 p.m., depending on the conditions. We will drop you off at a nice hotel in the city, where you can relax, explore the city and prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include...
