Golden Circle and Secret Lagoon
There are three parts to the iconic Golden Circle tour: the geothermal area known as Geysir, famous for its many hot springs, which fire torrents of bubbling water up to 25 meters into the air. The historic and geologically significant Thingvellir National Park, which bisects two continents and is home to Althingi, site of the oldest continuously running parliament, founded in 930 AD and the majestic Gullfoss (the golden waterfall), where a cascading stream of water, crashes over a chasm in an idyllic setting.
The Secret Lagoon
This ancient geothermal bathing pool, known as the old pool, in Icelandic, is situated in the idyllic area of Flúðir. It has warm, temperate waters and is set amidst stunning nature, making it a profound, relaxing and enjoyable experience.
Snorkeling in Silfra
Silfra is a natural wonder bathed in blue: the gap between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, it allows visitors to swim between two continents. This along with the icy clear glacial water, which allows you to see up to 100 meters, makes it one of the finest diving sites in the world and a place not to be missed.
Difficulty level: Moderate, everything else on this package tour is easy.
Snowmobiling on Langjokull Glacier
An adrenaline pumping ride, across a glacial wonderland, it is an experience, which all adventure seekers are sure to love. Providing exhilarating fun, along with gorgeous natural scenery in a place that cannot be beaten. There is something profound about skimming across the pristine snow, rimmed by capricious volcanoes, on this gigantic glacial paradise.
Day one of the tour, begins bright and early, with collection from your Reykjavik accommodation (9:00 in winter, 8:00 in summer). (Please note that this can last up to thirty minutes depending on your location.) Then when everyone is ready, we will take the scenic drive to the stunning Gullfoss waterfall (golden falls).
Gullfoss well and truly earns its reputation as one of Iceland’s most incredible sights: as the roaring waters of the Hvita River (White River), cascade over three separate lava steps, in a breath-taking display of the majesty and power of nature. On a summer’s day the golden hue of the rocks that make up the fall, cause the water to appear golden in color, while beautiful rainbows are also commonly formed above the falls themselves. It is a must-see sight for anyone visiting Iceland, and something that will remain with you for the rest of your life.
After Gullfoss, we will head to the renowned geothermal area of Geysir, which houses a number of erupting hot springs. Here we will see the steaming, bubbling waters of Strokkur, which throws violent streams of boiling water into the air that can reach up to 25 meters high and will give you a new perspective on the awesome power of nature. Along with the famous, but now dormant, Geysir, also known as the great geyser, which was the first geyser to be mentioned in print and gives all geysers their name.
Our penultimate stop will be Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is steeped in both historical, cultural and geographical significance. It plays host to Althingi, the world’s oldest still operational parliament, which was first held in 930 AD. It is also the spot that the European and North American tectonic plate meet, meaning that you can gaze across the gap between two continents. Thingvellir is also renowned for its awe-inspiring natural beauty, including sapphire blue lagoons, naturally occurring rock sculptures, luscious green vegetation and much, much more. It is a magical and alien landscape that will help you to understand the land of fire and ice.
The final stop on the tour is the idyllic village of Flúðir, an area with lots of geothermal activity, which plays host to the famous secret lagoon (Gamla Laugin in Icelandic, which literally translates to the old pool) the oldest swimming pool in Iceland. It is a gorgeous, naturally occurring hot spring, which combines warm rejuvenating waters, with stunning surroundings to create an atmosphere where you can relax in one of the world’s finest naturally occurring spas. Once you have enjoyed the magic that this ancient spa has to offer, we will take the scenic drive back to Reykjavik and arrive at around 17:00.
You will need:
Warm clothes, gloves and headwear, weatherproof top layer, good hiking shoes and your camera. You will also need a swimming costume and a towel for the Secret Lagoon.
Day two begins bright and early, at 8:00 am, when we collect you from your Reykjavik accommodation. (Please note that this process can last up to thirty minutes, depending on your location.)
The tour begins by traveling through the rustic agrarian areas, which play a fundamental role in Iceland’s culture: small towns and villages set in idyllic places, where life is simple and easy. Our first destination is Seljalandsfoss, a gorgeous waterfall, where water tumbles 65 meters, down to the idyllic pool below. It also offers visitors the chance to walk behind the fall itself, providing a unique perspective on what waterfalls are like, while also being the ideal place to snap a photo or two.
Following this we will explore the icy, crevice-ridden wilderness of the Sólheimajökull glacier, an ever-changing wonderland of rugged rock sculptures, beautiful ice figurines, and deep crevices. An awe-inspiring experience, which will allow you to understand the majesty and power of ancient frozen water. Our friendly, certified guides, will take you through this majestic ice-kingdom, ensuring that you are safe, while also providing a host of fascinating information on glaciers.
The penultimate stop of the tour will be the striking jet-black sands of Reynisfjara beach. An alluring, alien and unique place that goes against every assumption that you have about beaches. It comes replete with coal-black sands, which serve as a striking contrast to the white-crested, blue waves that wash against its shore, along with a number of fascinating basalt columns and caverns, which Icelandic legend holds are trolls who were turned to stone, as the sun rose.
The final stop of the tour will be the magnificent Skogafoss Waterfall, where icy-blue glacial waters tumble over the edge, surrounded by rich green vegetation and visitors have the opportunity to scale the 527 steps, which wind around it, to gain spectacular panoramas over the falls and surrounding area. The perfect way to end a busy and activity-filled day, before we return to Reykjavik, arriving at around 18:00.
Day three has differentiated pick-up times depending on the season (1st November – 31. May: Pick up starts at 12:00. From 1st June – 31. October: Pick up starts at 07:30), this process can last up to thirty minutes, depending on the part of Reykjavik that you are staying in.
From there we will travel through the spectacular scenery of southern Iceland, to the frozen wonderland of Langjökull, the second largest glacier in Iceland. Langjökull is a vast snow-carpeted world that is home to two mammoth ice-filled craters and rimmed by many more, capricious volcanoes. The views from its edges are no less impressive, including the Eiríksjökull glacier, a giant Table Mountain formed many millennia ago; Hofsjökull glacier (temple glacier) renowned for its domed peek; and the rainbow-colored Kerlingarfjöll Mountains.
You will explore this awe-inspiring world from the seat of an adrenaline pumping snowmobile, alongside one of our expert guides. It is the perfect combination of freedom and fun, allowing you to glide across the pristine white snow, and take in all the wonderous sensual experiences on offer. An experience that everyone will enjoy, which offers the perfect blend of adventure and scenery, ensuring that it will remain with you for the rest of your life. Once this exciting adventure has finished, we will return to Reykjavik and arrive back at around 18:00.
Please note that you will require a driving license to operate a snowmobile and that two people will share a snowmobile. We also recommend that you bring warm clothing and good hiking shoes, to wear underneath the snowmobile suits that we provide.
Day four begins bright and early with pick-up from selected points around Reykjavik at 9:00 am. (Please note that the process can last up to thirty minutes depending on your location.) Then once everyone has been collected, we will make the scenic drive to the iconic Silfra Fissure, which is submerged beneath Thingvellir National Park.
Silfra is one of the most incredible places in Iceland: an underwater paradise, which marks the gap between the continents of Europe and North America, meaning that you will actually be swimming between two continents. It is filled with filtered glacial water, meaning that it provides some of the clearest water that you will find anywhere in the world, allowing divers to see at least 100 meters into the distance. Silfra is, without question, one of the finest diving sites that you will find in the entire world, an underwater experience, which cannot be beaten.
The fissure itself, is divided into four incredible sections: Silfra Deep Crack, Silfra Hall, Silfra Cathedral and Silfra Lagoon, with the emerald green plants that grow in the lagoon, a particular highlight. Our expert guide, will talk you through everything, ensuring that you are totally safe, while experiencing all the magic that Silfra has to offer. We also provide a fully insulated drysuit, meaning that you won’t get cold in the icy glacial waters. Silfra is an experience, which will stay with you for the rest of your life, a treasure chest of magical sights buried beneath a glacier.
Please note: You will not be able to wear glasses while snorkeling, meaning that you must either bring prescription goggles or wear contact lenses. There are also some health and fitness requirements for snorkeling, alongside drysuit size restrictions, if you have any concerns about any of these, then please inquire before you book the tour.
