The Golden Circle
There are three parts to the iconic Golden Circle tour: the geothermal area known as Geysir, famous for its many hot springs, which fire torrents of bubbling water up to 25 meters into the air. The historic and geologically significant Thingvellir National Park, which bisects two continents and is home to Althingi, site of the oldest continuously running parliament, founded in 930 AD and the majestic Gullfoss (the golden waterfall), where a cascading stream of water, crashes over a chasm in an idyllic setting.
Iceland is renowned as the land of fire and ice, due to its many mighty glaciers and capricious volcanos. Nothing better illustrates this than lava tube caves, ancient volcanic conduits, which carried molten rock through under the surface of the earth. Eventually, as the volcano activity ceased, leading to long cylindrical tubes forming, with magnificent rock formations, incredible colors and much, much more. They are a truly unique spectacle, quite unlike anything else you will see anywhere else in the world, and a great thing to explore alongside expert guides, who will teach you how they helped shape Iceland today.
Glacier Hike & Ice Climbing
Your professional glacier guide will provide you with all the equipment you need, before taking you onto the mighty Sólheimajökull Glacier, an icy wonderland, which is always evolving. Here you will encounter an alien-landscape, of sink-holes crevices and craggy ice ridges: a spectacular experience, which will remain with you forever. There will also be the chance to test out your ice-climbing skills, with all the equipment that you will need provided.
South Coast of Iceland
An exciting place of exquisite natural beauty, iconic folklore and legend, it combines rich green vegetation, coal-black beaches, mighty glaciers, imposing mountains and majestic waterfalls, making it a place that every traveler will want to see. It hosts some truly incredible locations including Seljalandsfoss, where you can walk behind the gushing torrent of the waterfall Reynisfjara a jet-black volcano sand beach and the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, replete with shimmering diamond-like glaciers, which glide across its smooth surface. It is a cacophony of beauty, which will overwhelm your senses and make you want to stay there forever.
The iconic Blue lagoon is one of the most famous places in the entire of Iceland. It is possibly the world’s finest naturally occurring spa, situated amidst a black lava field, its sapphire blue waters, are famed for their healing properties. They are beautifully warmed by the lava, which runs underneath the surface of the earth, making it the kind of experience, which is both relaxing and sublime. So famous is the Blue Lagoon, that Icelandic doctors have actually been known to write prescriptions to attend. Whether it works or not, there is nothing quite like soaking in a natural spa, surrounded by incredible beauty, making it a must visit for anyone visiting Iceland.
Day one of the tour begins bright and early, at 9 am, when we collect you from your Reykjavik location (Please note that pick-up can last up to thirty minutes depending on where you are staying). Then once everyone has been collected, we will take the scenic drive to Bláfjöll (the Blue Mountains), which are around 20 km from Reykjavik.
From there we will travel back in time through the volcanic world that lies hidden beneath the mighty mountains: hiking through a fascinating lava tube, which will give you a greater understanding of the part that volcanos played in the formation of Iceland. Our expert guides will be on hand to answer any questions that you might have about this unique geological phenomenon.
Once we have finished the hike, we will travel to Gullfoss (the Golden falls), one of Iceland’s most iconic sights, where water cascades down three lava steps, in a majestic display of the power of nature. They are called the golden falls, because of the golden hue of the rocks beneath, which on a summer’s day, makes the water appear golden, and are an awe-inspiring sight, which will remain with you for the rest of your life. We will eat lunch overlooking this majestic natural phenomenon before, heading to the famous geothermal area of Geysir, which houses a number of erupting hot springs. Here we will see the steaming bubbling waters of Strokkur, which throws violent streams of water into the air that can reach up to 25 meters high and will give you a new perspective on the awesome power of nature.
We will finish at Thingvellir National Park, a world heritage site, that is steeped in both historical and geological significance. It is the original birthplace of the Icelandic Parliament, Althingi, the oldest parliament still in existence in the world, which met there for the first time in 930 AD. It is also the place that the European and North American tectonic plates meet, meaning that you can look across the gap between two continents. Thingvellir is also famed for its incredible natural beauty, including fascinating rock formations, sparkling glacial waters and a whole lot more. It is the kind of awe-inspiring place, which will remain with you for the rest of your life and is possibly the jewel in the crown of the land of fire and ice. Once we have seen all the magical sights that Thingvellir has to offer, we will return to Reykjavik at around 17:00.
