This incredible tour will take you on a two-day adventure through the land of fire and ice, encompassing some of the most enchanting places that Iceland has to offer. It begins with the iconic Golden Circle Route: Iceland’s most popular tourist trail that takes you to the Mid-Atlantic Rift and Althingi in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Thingvellir, to a series of bubbling geysers in the Geysir Geothermal area and the roaring cascade of the spectacular Gullfoss Waterfall. Day two will take us to Iceland’s majestic South Coast: a landscape replete with jet-black beaches, stunning waterfalls and crystalline glacial lagoons. There is no better way to explore some of Iceland’s most famous sights and is ideal for those on a short break or in combination with some of our other incredible tours.
Day 1 - Thingvellir, Geysir & Gullfoss
Day one starts in Reykjavik when we collect you from your accommodation and take the scenic journey to the Golden Circle Route.
Our first stop will be the magnificent Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is steeped in historical and geological importance. There we will find the plains of Althingi, where Viking Nobles gathered together to form the original Icelandic parliament in 930 AD. The modern parliament (now located in the warmer climes of Reykjavik) still bears its name, making it the longest continuously running parliament in the world. Thingvellir also marks the ever-expanding gap between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, meaning that you will actually be able to see the fissure between two continents. There is also a myriad of volcanically crafted rock formations, cascading waterfalls and icy-blue lakes, ensuring that Thingvellir will provide you with memories that you will treasure forever.
The road will then take us to the legendary Geysir Geothermal area, home to a multitude of teeming geysers that throw torrents of boiling water into the air every 3-8 minutes. The two most famous geysers there are the now dormant ‘Great Geysir’ which is the English word geyser originates from; alongside Strokkur, which is the most active in Iceland and propels water as high as 25 meters into the air. These incredible natural wonders have come to symbolize Iceland and are the ideal demonstration of the violent power of nature.
Our final stop will be the spectacular Gullfoss Waterfall (the golden falls), which gets its name from the golden colour that its water takes as it crosses the volcanic lava steps. The water originates from one of Europe’s largest glaciers and then crashes down the Hvita River (white river), until it reaches the waterfall. Seeing the roaring power of its cascade as it tumbles into the emerald valley below is a spine tingling experience that will remain with you for the rest of your life. It is also the perfect place to snap a truly spectacular picture.
We will then move on to Gamla Laugin (the Old Pool) a treasured Icelandic swimming pool that has been used by locals since 1891. Its volcanically heated waters are always between 38-40 degrees making it ideal for a replenishing soak amidst some stunning natural scenery. A small geyser erupts regularly nearby, providing the perfect contrast to the otherwise peaceful place.
We will then drive you back to your accommodation in Reykjavik, where you can either enjoy the bustling nightlife or relax ahead of the next day’s festivities.
Day 2 - Waterfalls, Jokulsarlon & Diamond Beach
On the second day, we will take you to Iceland’s majestic South Coast and we will pass the manmade wonder that is the Hellisheidi Geothermal Power plant on the way to our first stop: the spectacular Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. It is famous for its powerful cascade that crashes down 60 meters into a small valley below. There is a secret cave located behind its roaring torrent that allows us to see this sublime waterfall from a totally different perspective.
From there we will head to the stunning *Skogafoss Waterfall, whose wider cascade tumbles over a volcanic cliff edge into a gorge below. There is a meandering path cut into the hillside next to the falls, which we will scale and enjoy a magnificent view of the nearby mountains. There is a duo of strange rock formations located close to the waterfall, which local legend believes are trolls who were so enamored by the beauty of the falls that they forgot about dawn and were turned to stone. We will then head to the picturesque village of Vik for lunch, which is perched on the top of craggy cliffs and offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Our next stop will be the awe-inspiring Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, which is renowned for being one of the most beautiful places in the entire world. There we will find an icy-blue glacial lagoon, where icebergs glide across the peaceful surface glimmering whenever the sun hits them. You may well recognize this natural wonder from the many Hollywood films that it has appeared in, including two James Bond films, Batman Begins and many, many, more. As an optional extra, we can take a boat tour that weaves in and out of the glinting icebergs, allowing us to get up close and personal with this mesmerizing place of natural beauty.
The icebergs end up on the aptly named Diamond Beach, where they shine like diamonds against the coal-black volcanic sands. This truly majestic sight is breathtakingly beautiful and is the ideal place to snap a photo to create a memory that will last forever.
We will then proceed to the Skaftafell nature reserve, which is nestled in the shadow of the Vatnajökull Glacier and has a plethora of unique flora and fauna. We will stop for dinner in this glorious part of the Icelandic wilderness and gaze across imposing volcanoes and imperious glaciers. Our final stop will be the jet-black *Reynisfjara Beach, where the deep blue of the ocean waves wash up against the dark volcanic sands. Behind it lie a set of basalt sea stacks that rise in symmetrical columns against the craggy volcanic cliffs in a scene that is reminiscent of the Giant’s Causeway. We will then head back to Reykjavik having experience two magical days in the land of fire and ice.
*Please note: That from October 16th - May 14th we will skip the following activities because of the short daylight: Skógafoss, Reynisfjara and Reynisdrangar. The tour is also operated by our trusted partner in a larger bus during that time (not a minibus).
