Our first stop will be at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s most famous cascades. It sits at the foot of Eyjafjallajökull and its water originates from the glacier. In the summer, it is safe to take the path leading behind the waterfall, but in winter, it is usually frozen and therefore closed.

Not far from here comes the next stop at Skógafoss waterfall, another majestic cascade where the water plunges down from the 18-story tall cliffs. Skógafoss was used as a filming location for the TV show “Vikings” as well as the last season of “Game of Thrones”. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland.

Soon we will stop again, this time at the sea coast. The famous Reynisfjara black sand beach is one of the most visited places in Iceland. Its thrilling rock formations, hidden caves, outstanding sea stacks, and long, black sand coastline enchants everyone’s minds!

For lunch, we will stop at a nearby town called Vík í Mýrdal where there will be a spectacular view of the Reynisdrangar sea stacks from the window of our restaurant. The town is home to an idyllic little church which we will also visit.

As we drive onwards through the largest lava field in all of Europe, we will pass by some truly magical landscapes. Soon we will make another stop at Kirkjubæjarklaustur, which translates to “Church Town Monastery”, a small village with quite an interesting history. After some refreshments, we will continue east through a large extension of sand plains, an area of black lava, sand, and ash of around 700 square kilometers (270 square miles).

While we enjoy the unmatched panoramas, our skilled guide will explain the history and geology of the area. They will tell us more about the most famous volcanic eruptions and how locals dealt with the harsh conditions in the old times.

As we continue our drive eastwards, glaciers will soon come into view. After we have passed through the enormous sand plain, we will see the outlets of the mighty Vatnajökull, the largest icecap in Europe.

Approaching the glacier, we will stop at the beautiful Skaftafell Nature Reserve in the National Park of Vatnajökull. It is one of the most picturesque areas in Iceland and a perfect photography spot for amateurs and professionals alike. We will also drive by Iceland’s highest peak, Hvannadalshjúkur, which is 2,110 meters (6,992 feet) high.

The next stop is at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, the crown jewel of Iceland’s natural wonders. This glacier lagoon was formed by a melting glacier called Breiðamerkursjökull. At the point where the melting glacier reaches sea level, massive pieces break away from the glacier tongue.

These icebergs start to float across the lagoon towards the ocean. The lake itself is some 75 stories deep and some of the floating icebergs can measure up to 20-30 meters (65-98 feet) high. This is where the expression means "the tip of the iceberg" comes from! The scenery is such an otherworldly sight that it leaves none untouched. It is no wonder why Jökulsárlón is one of the visitors’ favorite places in Iceland!

We will reach our country hotel in the Jökulsárlón area around dinnertime. The rooms are friendly, simple, and have the all-important WIFI connection available. A rich breakfast is included in the price. Located between the mountains and the sea, the views from the hotel are simply terrific.

If the conditions allow, this location is perfect for Northern Lights watching between September and March. If the aurora forecast shows activity and the sky is clear, we step outside our accommodation and check for the amazing Northern Lights in the evening.

vik myrdalur reynisdrangar

We will visit the village of Vik í Mýrdal, which has a nice view of Reynisdrangar ocean cliffs

Day 2 - Jökulsárlón - Diamond Beach - Vatnajökull - Skaftafell

After a delicious breakfast, we will gear up and go explore a real ice cave inside the Vatnajökull glacier! Accompanied by an expert local glacier guide, we will jump on board a monstrous, modified Superjeep to reach our extreme destination.

Day Highlights

  • Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
  • Natural Ice Cave
  • Vatnajökull Glacier
  • Diamond Beach
  • Skaftafell Nature Reserve
  • Northern Lights search (if conditions are right)

Included

  • Hotel breakfast
  • Visit to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
  • Safely guided tour in a natural ice cave
  • Certified Glacier Guide
  • Necessary Glacier Equipment
  • Drop-off in Reykjavík
Read more about day 2...

Glaciers are truly spectacular, but it is not possible to visit them without a specially trained guide and the necessary equipment. Our guide will be one of those who has listened to the “breathing” of the ice for most of their lives. For this adventure, good hiking boots are essential. You will need to wear sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes that cover your ankle as we will strap on crampons for the short hike to the cave.

We will have time to explore the ice cave and stay inside for a while, taking photos and enjoying the moment. It is going to be cold, so do not forget to dress in many layers. Please note that you will be wearing a helmet, so make sure that your winter hat will fit under a helmet.

After the surreal experience of the ice cave, it will be time to head back to Reykjavik. It is a long drive, but we will have another stop at the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. It is nice to see it in different light and weather conditions as the place never looks the same twice!

We will also visit the nearby Diamond Beach (also called the Crystal Beach). This is the place where big ice chunks reach the sea and are washed up on shore after being polished. Sparkling ice rocks decorate the black sandy coastline for hundreds of meters, making it an unforgettable experience to walk among them. Some pieces are small like diamonds but others can be as large as the size of ten people.

From here, we will head back to Reykjavík with just a few short stops along the way. We will then drop you off in Reykjavík at around 9 pm, marking the end of our magical two-day adventure!

a spectacular experience

5.0 by Verified customer 2017-02-18
We had such a wonderful guide who ensured we were safe and enjoying our adventure. The tour was well paced and I felt we had the appropriate amount of time at each stop. I enjoyed the Icelandic music our guide played in the bus and all of the fun facts he had to share. The only thing that could make the experience even better would be wifi and cell phone chargers on the bus and perhaps some free refreshments! Overall it was a spectacular experience that I will recommend to friends and family!

Great overnight excursion

Holly's knowledge on geology made our trip much more informative and enjoyable. We learned so fun from her!

I think this tour is good value

5 by Verified customer 2017-02-27
Holly was amazing! Loved the Viking restaurant experience as well Just wish the weather would have been better and we could have done the ice caves! Maybe next time!

an top activity for us in Iceland

5 by Verified customer 2017-03-03
I was happy that we were able to do what we did, even if weather did not permit a glacier hike at the time that it was probably planed. I was just really glad and know that we were lucky that the ice cave worked out. Even though the super-jeep broke down on the glacier - losing time and forcing us to rush on our way back-it was super fun and such things happen.

Grreat tour

One of the best tours I've ever been on. Thank you for doing everything to make sure we have a great memorable experience! I will definitely go with Extreme Iceland again on my next visit.

Very well run tour

5 by Nicola 2018-11-04
We took this two day tour along the south coast and saw all the main sights including waterfalls, icebergs, glaciers, lava field and off-roading then exploration of an ice cave. The driver was super friendly and kept us informed of each stop and what to expect. The sites were spectacular and the weather was great, and we had plenty of time at each stop. The company were easy to deal with on email. I highly recommend this tour.

2 Day Jokulsarlon, South Coast and Ice Caving Tour

5 by Jen 2018-11-09
The 2 Day - South Coast, Ice Cave, Skaftafell & Jokulsarlon Ice Lagoon tour was absolutely amazing. I highly recommend this tour. Our guide ('Eagle') gave us so much information about the country and the culture. The Ice Cave was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to go onto/into a glacier. The hotel was lovely. And the non-stop gorgeous landscape of the south coast is just incredible.

I would definitely recommend EI

Pascal was a fantastic guide and the trip was well planned and executed.

Incredible Iceland Winter Trip

5 by John 2018-12-04
I just returned from the 2-day South Coast Ice Cave, Skaftafell & Jökulsárlón Ice Lagoon tour. This experience exceeded my expectations of how truly amazing and beautiful Iceland would be. Our tour guide was Adolph, an Icelander, and his knowledge, experience, sense of humor and charm made the whole tour that much more enjoyable. From the very start he made our group of 18 comfortable and easily met everyone’s needs. Even the adventure hotel we stayed at and the meals we had together were great. We were able to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights on the way back to Reykjavík. Highly recommended!

Extremely awesome!

5 by Joanne 2018-12-07
Thanks to Swenny for guiding us through some extremely high wind storms and rearranging the itinerary so we could still experience everything on the agenda. Worth every penny!

Overall is very good.

4 by Yannis 2018-12-18
The tour guide is nice and helpful. The tour is very good overall. Except that the ice cave tour was outsourced and that guide bring us to the cave that was not a blue one and the time allowing for the ice cave tour was rather short. We saw that other tour groups were able to walk inside deeper into the cave but we were just like in and out.

south coast tour

5 by Renee Kotz 2018-02-26
The south coast tour was an amazing experience filled with stunning scenery, and our guide Oliver worked very hard to make sure we got to all the attractions despite an incoming weather front. He also took extra time to bring us to a good aurora viewing area and then shared the photos he took with his own camera.

Amazing tour!

5 by Victor 2018-02-27
All amazing spots! Iceland is a land of magic! Thanks for all the crew to making all the tour so remarkable.

Fascinating experience

5 by Evelina 2018-02-27
That was a very exciting and highly satisfactory trip due to the professional, experienced and always attentive attitude of our guide Oliver who showed us the most spectacular sights on the way and patiently waited with us in a very bad weather condition until we saw the phenomenal northern lights. Thank you, Oliver, you were the best guide we have ever had!

2 Day Tour - AMAZING

5 by Jovana Stankovic 2018-02-28
"first I'm going to start with Beca (our tour guide), she was such a sweet and information filled individual, really made the tour amazing. she made sure we stopped everywhere we were supposed to and even made a few stops to show us a unique metal art piece on the side of the road as well as an area where a volcano erupted. She was a great driver as well, the weather was not at its best, and not for one-second did not feel safe in the van with her driving. The tour itself was beautiful. Granted we went in the winter so we knew we were risking the weather and maybe not being able to see everything, but we ended up seeing it all and more. Every stop we made was breathtaking and we had ample time to take photos, take in the scenery and venture around. If I came back in the summer, I would definitely do the tour again so I can experience it again, but with better weather. there is no word that explains my experience on this tour justice. so I will leave it at..........MAKE SURE YOU BOOK THIS TOUR."

Good experience!

4 by Serena 2018-03-03
"The guide was very funny and open-minded! We had such a great time together. We couldn't do all the sightseeing due to the weather but other places were still unbelievably beautiful!! I would choose this company again for the next time."

Awesome adventure

6 by Cheryl 2018-03-03
From the very first contact, Extreme Iceland has been incredibly professional. Our tour guide was absolutely fantastic with lots of information and rearranging our days according to the weather, even taking us to extra places that were not part of the itinerary to make sure we saw icebergs as due to weather it was not possible at the designated stop. The hotel accommodation was simple but clean and just what we needed and the food on offer was great. Overall we loved it and wouldn’t hesitate to book with Extreme when we return. Thanks to all your team!!

Fantastic Experience

5 by Jenny 2018-03-08
"It is rare that I leave a review but I feel that the experience was above and beyond. Our tour guide (Hilmer) was so kind and genuinely excited to show us and teach us about Iceland. When we were on the glacier hike, our tour guide (Michael) held the hand of one of our tour group members the entire hike because she struggled to keep her balance. I have never seen such gracious and helpful guides. Thank you all so much for allowing my husband and me to experience Iceland safely and for creating such a memorable journey. I would recommend this tour and this company to anyone. Takk!"

A nice trip to south coast

"I can't thank enough Rebecca for the amazing 2 days tours. Because of her, our tour was well organized and enjoyable. She is amazing in every aspect. Loved loved the tour. I also want to thank Kooba for the amazing walk on the glacier. Rebecca and Kooba are talented and gifted tour guides. They are not doing the job they provided us with an outstanding and unforgettable experience. They are very knowledgeable and gifted. I had later other tours with grayline and didn't like it at all. If you want to have a memorable tours book with confidence with extreme Iceland. A++++++ Thank you for everything."

Fantastic trip!

The trip was great! It was stress-free and highly enjoyable. Our guide, Svenni, was droll. He offered funny commentaries about Iceland, the history, the culture, and took care of everything.

Excellent tour

5 by jenny 2018-10-08
We did the 2 days South Coast Tour with Svenny (not sure respelling) as our Tour guide. He was excellent, providing lots of information on the sites before we visited and presenting as friendly and helpful. The tour itself is nicely paced with enough time at each of the sites as well as enough time for a bit of shut-eye on the bus between sites. Although we didn't manage to see the northern lights on our tour, the other attractions more than made up for it. Our favorites were the Diamond beach and the glacier hike as well as the ice cave. I would definitely recommend this tour.

South Coast 2-day tour review

5 by Peter Galo 2019-01-01
"Overall, the tour was amazing. Nature is simply breathtaking, and we got also lucky with the weather since it was not raining nor much of a strong wind. The tour guide was also very good. He knows a lot about the places we were visiting and also about the people living there. Also, he was always willing to help, no matter how small the issue was. I would definitely recommend this tour to everybody, who wants to see the wonderful nature of Iceland's south coast."

Loved this experience! Way better than my expectations

"This was an awesome experience! Our tour guide Hjalti Bjornsson was very experienced and he was very thoughtful and helpful. He was really engaging and enthusiastic and informative when it comes to introducing all the attraction sites. He is very sincere in showing us all these places. Though Aurora Lights hunting was not inside the itinerary, he helped us to seek out the forecast and introduced a nice spot to see the lights, and WE DID! IT WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE!"

Our guide Einar was excellent. He filled our trip with his knowledge of Icelandic history and geography. We had a great time at all of the locations. Eric, our glacier guide, was also great and filled us in with the history of the glaciers and their current state. We truly enjoyed the entire trip and it was well worth it.

We did the 2-day south coast with glacier lagoon and ice cave tour. It was amazing and we had the best time. Our guide Pascal (I think that’s spelled correctly) was awesome and very knowledgeable. It truly was the highlight of our trip.

Good tour guide

This is my second time to join Extreme Iceland. The tour guide is very helpful.

blue ice

5 by jim 2019-02-18
"This trip does exactly what you would hope from a 2-day tour of ice, water, basalt, lava, and more ice. It was more than we had hoped. The waterfalls are epic, the basalt columns on the black sand beach are immense and the landscape you travel through like another planet. Doing it after, and during, snow added to the otherworldliness. The glacier tour is excellent and the ice cave mind-blowing but for us, the best bits were the icebergs on the beach and trapped in the lagoon. Incredible, wild beauty. Although too old to join in, the sites were also mega-popular with people taking selfies for Instagram including several in wedding clothes. So you may want to dress up. Great, down to earth guide who also slipped in an extra site. The 'basic' Country Hotel might have been basic for some nationalities but was more than adequate. A great excursion. I'd love to do it in summer too."

Good tour

4 by Wong 2019-03-04
The tour guide is very good and professional. It would be better if we can stay 20 mins longer on every spot.

Excellent

4 by Catherine Phillips 2019-03-23
Our guide was excellent; very knowledgeable and good-humored. The whole experience was enjoyable and we saw a lot. It’s a photographers dream! The only slight disappointment for us was that we had anticipated more hiking and less time on the bus, but we possibly misunderstood what to expect. Overnight accommodation was lovely.

Great tour !

5 by Husson Jennifer 2019-03-25
"We spent 2 amazing days in the south! The organization was very good and the landscapes are very beautiful. Our guide, Hjalti Björnsson, shared with us his love for his country. Thanks for all, for team spirit, kindness, jokes, and positive attitude !!"

Two Day Tour and Three Day tour

5 by Kathleen Hoffmann 2019-04-04
My daughter and I spent her spring break in Iceland this year. We had two different tours provided by Extreme Iceland. Both guides were extremely professional. All accommodations were clean. The restaurants selected had great food and gave a real taste of Iceland Cuisine. We had a great Whale watching adventure complete with whales and fresh fish caught and BBQ for our group. When we went to the spa and the weather was too cold for an enjoyable visit our guide got on the phone with the company and rearranged the next day so that we could go to another spa on the way back. HE then took us to a tour of an old Iceland tour on his own time to make sure that everyone got what they expected from the three-day tour. Bravo!

Nice Tour Guide & Tour

Our tour guide - introduced himself called as O-day (easy to remember :> ) is nice and professional. He is very patient with his guests to answer their questions. Our tour was also great with the wonderful Country Hotel.

Well organized

5 by Argo 2019-04-11
Although I might be blinded by Iceland's environment and terrain, I'll try to mainly focus on Extreme Iceland (Arctic Adventures). All went surprisingly smooth and well, from online booking, through pick up and being on the road with them. Online communication prior to our tour was quick and polite. The tour guides we had were kind, helpful and thoughtful. The buses were comfortable and clean. The stops at sightseeing locations on tours were of different length, but enough for a great experience. Although at some one-day-tour, the stops could be a bit longer for better enjoyment, then the overall duration of the tour might get too long. Without the guides, we certainly wouldn't have got to know so much about Iceland. Thank you for the great experience!
