As we drive out of the city, a few attractive landmarks will probably catch your attention. We will drive by some odd lava formations, volcanic red hills, impressive mountains, moss-covered lava fields, and the world's third-largest geothermal power plant.

After driving through several small villages, we leave the inhabited areas behind. Beautiful, unspoiled landscapes surround us from every direction. A few horse and sheep farms occur here and there along the way.

After about two hours of driving, the first sightseeing stop of the day is at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls. The stunning waterfall drops 60 meters (197 ft) and, in the summertime, you can even take a stroll behind it!

In clear weather, we will be able to see the majestic 1,651-metre-high (5,417 ft) Eyjafjallajökull volcano. It is covered in thick glacial ice. This volcano erupted most recently in 2010, resulting in cancellations for over 107,000 international flights across Europe.

After a short drive, we will stop for the legendary Skógafoss waterfall. It has a similar height as Seljalandsfoss but is much wider and more powerful. You can climb the stairs up to the top and admire the dreamy panorama from there.

Then we continue our tour along the south coast towards increasingly beautiful landscapes. After another half hour, we make another stop at the famous black sand beach, called Reynisfjara.

The pitch-black volcanic sand is unique in the world! The astonishing columnar basalt formations and the giant sea stacks only add to the wonder. It was no surprise when this beach was recently ranked as one of the world's most beautiful beaches by National Geographic.

The breathtaking Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and the Diamond Beach are, beyond any doubt, the crown jewels not only of the South Coast but arguably of the whole country.

Giant pieces of ice break away from a glacier tongue of the Vatnajökull ice cap. These massive icebergs float through a lagoon towards the sea. Here you will have the option of adding a boat tour and sailing onto the lagoon in between the icebergs! You can touch the ice and even taste it if you want! Seals can often be found in the lagoon, so we might get the chance to spot them.

Only a kilometer from the lagoon lies the legendary Diamond Beach, where the waves keep pushing the pieces of ice back onto the coast. For hundreds of meters, these sparkling ice rocks can be seen decorating the coast, like precious diamonds. Jökulsarlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach are the most photographed places in Iceland.

Leaving Jökulsárlón, next up on your adventure is a visit to a naturally formed ice cave. You are in for a once-in-a-lifetime experience as you get up close and personal to some of Mother Nature's best artwork! The cave glints with many wondrous shades of blue and showcases beautiful ice formations. You will be standing inside the body of an ancient glacier! Your guide will tell you all about Iceland's ice caves and their majestic structures.

Then, we'll head back in the direction of Reykjavík. Along the way, there might be a few extra stops for lunch, snacks or some amazing quick photos. Once back in Reykjavík, we'll check into your accommodation.

*Please note that ice caves are natural phenomena and we have no control over them. In case if the ice cave is inaccessible, we'll go on a glacier hike tour instead

Day 3: Iceland’s top 3 tourist destinations and a relaxing bath in a hot spring

After breakfast, you'll be picked up from your hotel in Reykjavík. Then we'll head to the famous Golden Circle route. This tour is extremely popular among visitors to Iceland as it features three amazing natural wonders: an extremely powerful waterfall, a geothermal field with erupting geysers, and a large crack between the tectonic plates where you can easily take a walk.

Day Highlights

  • The Golden Circle
  • Þingvellir National Park (Thingvellir)
  • Geysir Hot Springs
  • Gullfoss waterfall
  • The Secret Lagoon

Included

During the 40-minute drive to the first spot, you will see a completely different landscape than that of the first two days. Bare lava fields stretch tens of kilometers in every direction without a single tree in the landscape.

The first stop of the day is at the UNESCO world heritage site Thingvellir (Þingvellir) National Park. This is the site where the Icelandic Parliament was established back in 930 AD, making it the oldest parliament in the world.

It's also the location where the North-American and Eurasian tectonic plates move apart at approximately 2.5 centimeters a year. This is actually how Iceland has formed, as the tectonic plates have been moving apart like this for millions of years. You will be able to walk in the huge crack between the continents!

After some 40 minutes of driving, the next stop is the famous Geysir Geothermal Field. It is a large, high-temperature area with steaming and boiling hot springs. Here you can witness Iceland’s most impressive geyser erupting. You surely won’t miss it, since it erupts every 5 to 8 minutes!

Close by, just 10 minutes from the geyser, we will stop at the magnificent Gullfoss Waterfall. The waterfall cascades down two huge steps (11 and 22 meters), descending into a deep gorge. It possesses immense power, which you will experience for yourself as you can walk very close to it. You will be able to feel the spray of the glacial water on your face! On sunny days, a rainbow is very likely to show up.

After all of these mesmerizing sightseeing stops, we'll head to a small, natural geothermal lake, the so-called “Secret Lagoon”. Having a relaxing bath in the 38-40 Celsius hot spring is just magical! The perfect way to end a beautiful day. After a couple of hours soaking in the water, we'll head back to the hotel in Reykjavík.

Day 4: Snæfellnes peninsula, "Iceland in miniature"

On our fourth day, we’ll head west. We’ll leave the Ring Road and explore the remote Icelandic countryside on the sparsely populated Snæfellnes peninsula. This area is known for its extremely diverse landscapes as it has every kind of natural attraction that Iceland is famous for. A volcano, a glacier, large lava fields, gorgeous waterfalls, dramatic sea cliffs and sea stacks, black sand beaches, and far more. Locals like to describe this peninsula as “Iceland in miniature”.

Day Highlights

  • Arnarstapi Village
  • Hellnar
  • Vatnshellir Cave (*entry fee extra)
  • Djúpalónssandur Beach
  • Mt. Kirkjufell
  • Gerðuberg

Included

  • Hotel breakfast
  • Guided Minibus Tour
  • Drop-off in Reykjavík

Despite its stunning beauty, the area sees significantly fewer visitors than the South Coast or the Golden Circle. You will experience the unmatched atmosphere of the Icelandic countryside.

Our trip will include plenty of scenic stops. A dramatic black sand beach with incredible rock formations, Djúpalónssandur. The tiny and adorable fishing villages: Arnarstapi and Hellnar. Iceland’s most photographed mountain, the beautifully symmetric and cone-shaped Mt. Kirkjufell.

Optionally, a visit to the Vatnshellir lava cave, at the feet of the majestic Snæfellsjökull volcano, could make this journey even more exciting!

After the long day around the peninsula, we return to Reykjavík, where you’ll be dropped off at your preferred location around 20:00 (8 pm).
