We drive out of Reykjavik through Kjalarnes to Hvalfjordur - with its steep sides and indented coastline, this fjord is simply beautiful. We continue to the fertile farmlands of Borgarfjordur and visit the hot springs at Deildartunguhver. We stop to see these wonderful cascading falls, as Hraunfossar falls into the river Hvita, fed with groundwater from beneath an ancient lava flow, most of the water comes from the underground streams which flow from Langjokull glacier.
From here we will continue to Iceland's second largest glacier, Langjokull, the panoramic views are absolutely stunning. We recommend snowmobiling on the glacier as an optional extra. However, the most amazing scenery does not end here, the drive back will take us through the desert valley of Kaldidalur (Cold Valley), which is west of and runs parallel to Langjökull glacier. is a higland pass offering a scenic view to nearby glaciers and mountains such as Langjokull, Thorisjokull and Skjaldbreidur shield volcano.
The Kaldidalur pass takes us to Thingvellir National Park, listed on UNESCO World Heritage site, and the best place to see how the tectonic plates are drifting apart. The Great Atlantic rift makes it possible for the visitor to stand on the Eurasian plate for a few minutes and then cross over to the American plate, truly unbelievable but absolutely true! Thingvellir is also a site of great historical significance to Icelanders because it is the place where the parliament of Iceland was founded in the year 930, making it the oldest established parliament in the world.
This is truly an Iceland excursion for those who want to combine scenery with some action.
